I love her but I wish people wouldn't say there will never be another like her. She put in the work to enable hope, charity, and success in others every day & would want us to believe that a future of generosity & kindness is still deserved & possible even if she's gone now. We can all enable it.

Here's the official announcement of Parton's passing from her reps, along with the request that in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com
NASHVILLE, TN (August 25, 2026) – Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

Dolly is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years Carl Thomas Dean (1942 – 2025), her mother Avie Lee Caroline Owens (1923 – 2003), and father, Robert Lee Parton, Sr. (1921 – 2000).

A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. something interesting in the Cleves/Walden debacle is the pervasive assumption that comics are a) necessarily an inferior, derivative form that can't be credited with the diligence of research or scholarship, and b) so vastly popular and lucrative that "real writing" must be protected from them

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

nonfiction by genre gradient (graphic novels/ttrpgs, history -> art/queer theory -> art, poetry/plays -> the classics corner -> textbooks) fiction is arranged roughly by genre but mostly by where it fits.

I called the doctor for a new one and the nurse on the phone said “I need to check mine, because I do the same thing!” So now I’m reminding you all too.

Preview: Bruce should be taking in the vista, but he can't tear his eyes off of Clark, his eyes shining, his mouth parted in delight, every inch of him soaked in that strange golden light. Bruce's heart skips, caught in his throat, and Clark looks back at him. For a brief moment his face is unreadable, caught in shadows as thick and velvety as the light is warm. Three events in reverse chronological order that made me think about gendered violence
A drawing of a woman looking uncomfortable with two men surrounding her and smiling, with another man looking uncomfortable in the foreground. Caption: This morning I was listening to the Game Studies Study Buddies episode on Nicholas Taylor’s The Grounds of Gaming. They talk about a story he tells about a time at a LAN party where a bunch of guys wanted to take a picture with a girl in attendance, and how uncomfortable he was with the situation, how in the photo (which he did not include in the book, to protect this woman from being forever published as the subject of this unwanted act) you can tell how badly he wants to escape the frame. Maybe it was a gaming conference or expo. Maybe she was employed to be there. Maybe she is named in the book, maybe he tracked her down and asked her to tell him how she felt with arms around her, an object to get a souvenir photograph of. I haven’t read the book, I’m telling you this third hand. I imagine in the actual photo she’s smiling. What else do you do in that situation.A drawing of Seven of Nine in the background of an image with captain Janeway and the Doctor arguing in the foreground. Caption: Last night I watched an episode of Star Trek Voyager where Seven of Nine is violently assaulted by someone the ship is doing weapons deals with. He and his assistant hold her down, hack into the cybernetics integrated into her body, and extract nanobots from her blood. Or maybe they didn’t. The crew of the Voyager doesn’t particularly believe her. The man who committed the assault dies and his name is cleared and everyone says she made it all up, she mixed it up with her memories of the last time she was violently assaulted and her body was changed against her will. She is made — by the other characters and the script — to feel guilty for his death. The episode is not from her perspective. Its about the Doctor, who starts the episode trying to teach her how to be a normal person; who surfaces her memories of the assault through psychotherapy; who believes her and pushes to investigate the assault; who is so, so contrite that his good heart made him leap to conclusions and believe an unreliable narrator and get an innocent man killed.A drawing of me standing outside with a man hugging me and kissing my neck. Caption: I work as a flower delivery driver and about a year ago I brought an arrangement to a house in [city redacted] and there was a man at home alone and he asked me to come inside and leave the flowers on the table, they were for his mother. When we got back outside he asked me to wait because he wanted to give me a tip. I thought about just leaving but didn’t. He brought out two dollars, pulled me into his arms, and kissed my neck. It was wet and soft. I know it could have been so much worse — I had just been inside his house — but it was an unpleasant reminder of what my body means in the world, what people might assume and want when they see me. I say I use she/her in the way a car or a boat does, and I’m trying to be funny but I also kind of mean a solidarity with these pretty, desirable, genderless objects who have no say in how they’re percieved. I don’t know. At least I get to be the one to tell you this story.

durandal.blog/blog/hammaja... 3,100 word book review that started as an attempt to articulate what didn't work for me about makana yamamoto's "hammajang luck" and spun out into something about twilight mirage, michael mann's film heat, and suspension of emotional disbelief
There is a likeability crisis in much contemporary queer sff. Authors are unwilling to make their characters look bad, and it compromises the integrity of the story. I don’t think this is the result of individual authors’ incompetence. The state of the publishing industry and the social media ecosystem around genre fiction has refigured the reader as, primarily, a customer, and the customer is always right.

If Yamamoto had written a highly entertaining and optimistic crime novel with a cast of highly flawed marginalized people who the reader is expected to root for even as they hurt each other, themselves, and the people around them—if they took seriously the premise of they story they did in fact write—it may have been more difficult to market. It may have received more negative Goodreads reviews from the kind of people who don’t like Wuthering Heights because it’s just a bunch of terrible people treating each other terribly. But oh my god. Who cares. Those people can go read a book that isn’t about people who steal things for a living and send each other to jail.

Expecting authors to honour the gravity of their own concepts is not in conflict with appreciating fun, escapist genre fiction. Why are the “let people enjoy things [and don’t say anything negative about the things they enjoy]” crew the only ones who deserve to enjoy anything?
