As long as everyone’s talking about sex stuff, a reminder that I’m fundraising for @scarleteen.com (link in the next post). Scarleteen has been at it with high quality, free, inclusive, joyful sex ed for almost 30 years. They’re one of the few online resources left standing.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

this paper is incredible
ROMANCING THE BONE.The women generated four terms that had no
equivalent in the male group's list, all taken from the stock euphemisms of romance fiction, a genre with which men are less familiar (or less willing to admit familiarity). They all fit into the frame "She felt his — against her." They are throbbing manhood, swelling passion, swelling hardness, and growing desire. A related euphemistic term was family jewels.

WELL. If you wondered why I had zero things to say about the NYT piece on the HR AI fic situation last month...I had zero things to say publicly then. 🥲 Thank you to everyone who discussed this situation with me and read a draft of this. I tried my best to illustrate these longstanding dynamics:

I also highly recommend this story! it's long, thoughtful, and deeply engaged with fandom history and dynamics in ways that no other reporting on this topic has been. I said "oof" several times while reading it, which is not a compliment to AI but is a compliment to Kayti Burt.

I think a lot about how gentrification and categorization is really flattening everything. It's okay to let things just exist without needing to define them down to three tropes in a trench coat. idk. everything feels so rotten.

Just like we should wonder who benefits when we say "this AI machine is the only way to prove something is AI", I think we should also question who benefits when we say "readers don't care."

A thread on special editions, luxury books, and publishing history: In 1903, J. M. Dent created Everyman’s Library, intended as a cheap line of hardbacks to make a classical education accessible as mass literacy rates were on the rise.

yes! exactly! the promise of AI is limitless knowledge, divorced from the actual people that generated it. information without context or labor or connection! a book with no author! fuck off!!!

I appreciated this. I'll add that what I've heard from author friends who got the special edition/sprayed edge treatment is that it increases the time dedicated to production at the expense of time dedicated to editorial. More time to spray the edges means less time to write and edit the book.

this is partly because I reread/rewatch stuff I love so much (more than other people, I think!), but I do looooove a piece of media that repays revisiting. can't wait to run back through this whole season a couple of times with my noticing glasses on.

The best fantasy & PNR romance is written by people who understand that this is true but also know how to navigate it in a way that can simultaneously embrace the parts that give us thrills while threading the needle on consent & decency. And there's lots of it out there!

One thing being discussed in SFF circles is how SFF magazines are getting lots of AI-generated submissions purported to be written by authors of marginalized identities. A good example of how GenAI is not any kind of tool of equality or diversity, but really the exact opposite.

not the main problem with today's book landscape, but do you think we could find a way to bring back long-running fantasy series whose authors have not even begun to think about the possibility of resolving their psychosexual issues so their books end up reshaping queer teens' minds permanently

apropos of the thing of the day: just about every construction regulation that you personally find to be annoying overkill is in place because somebody had a grisly, avoidable death. they don’t establish regulations ahead of disaster just to be safe. they do it to clean up horrifying messes

IWTV/TVL are just full-throatedly about the things they're about. It's not trying to hold my hand and resolve the cognitive dissonance I feel about being interested and engaged with the inner life of a character who just accidentally murdered a sweet, good-hearted carriage driver.

genre romance for decades was allowed to do this, but the trade off was that everyone looked down on it and made fun of it. Now that it's gained mainstream acceptance, the books are way less sexy and fun.

When people say they like character based shows, I think what they’re really saying is they like shows that are relationship based. Every show is the story of the relationships between the people on screen and between an audience member & the story. TPTB now routinely cut all that off at the knees 👎🏻
