here's some more unsolicited advice from yours truly IN zine form. longposter.neocities.org/zineonzine.pdf please make a zine.

hi. welcome to my zine about making and distributing zines.
specifically essay zines. we will discuss:
+ how to generate ideas for zines
+ tips for writing essays
+ how to build an audience for your zines
+ a peek into my process for shipping and fulfilling zine orders
this is adapted from a series of articles i’ve written over the past
years and a talk i gave at fanworks con 2023. i won’t talk about the
details of actually making a zine (like folding paper, binding, or
software) because i don’t think i have that much special expertise
on that topic. i mean look at this booklet. but i am confident that i
can give you some food for thought on the topics above. let’s go.

but you're right! zine production is project management and it's best to learn how to do that at a small scale first. also I think fandoms would benefit from less professionalization generally anyway! let's be messy!!

oh I had barely scraped the surface comicswise! I was reading cap comics at the time but pretty casually and also that was around when I dropped them because I got so mad about hydra cap 😭

breaks my heart when people respond to zine scams with long threads of "advice" boiling down to 1) don't make zines and 2) if you do, professionalize. genuinely think my advice would be the complete opposite. go smaller, go shittier, go more diy, and all of that will keep it manageable.

rip to 6k of sambucky road trip from 2016 you were too much plot for me to write back then

whereas if you cap your sales at however many you can make on your own printer you are in control of the whole process, and if you fuck up or get overwhelmed or sick or whatever you haven't paid a printer a nonrefundable deposit and you don't have 20k you have to figure out how to return to people.

plus then you're dealing with just tremendous amounts of money, which is tempting when it's sitting in your bank account and also generally impossible for an individual person to repay if something DOES go wrong. and people have higher expectations if you charged them 90;bucks for a bundle!

it's hard to produce a full color 200 page book and also coordinate eight different kinds of merch all of which come from different suppliers! and because that's now the dominant mode of fandom book production people are liable to think it isn't as much work as it actually is.

13 perfectly ripe peaches @shipyrds.bsky.social · 21h

right I actually think the fandom art book culture PROMOTES people not getting the end product they expected because the mods get in over their heads or have something go wrong in production or feel totally overwhelmed by the pressure of project management and then. they're in the wind.

omg yes that part was delightful. celine wakes up like who has turned my room into a garden and of course the expectation is her hordes of admirers but instead it is One unhinged lesbian

this is a general statement but also about the duke by anna cowan, a regency romance that understands that what is sexy about a duke is the power imbalance. and also that she should be a butch lesbian 🙏

I love her but I wish people wouldn't say there will never be another like her. She put in the work to enable hope, charity, and success in others every day & would want us to believe that a future of generosity & kindness is still deserved & possible even if she's gone now. We can all enable it.

if that plain pink one is from their smooth series I wouldn't personally recommend it- since the cover is kind of a stiff foam it doesn't like to lie flat and you have to hold it open, especially with a cover on! but the others are so cute
