when I put book covers in the graphic I make for my newsletters, it's my habit to use the cover I know (from my library loan or book that I own or whatever) but sometimes, especially with romance novels, the older cover is SO much more fun

#fridayFling I seem to always be using the word "grounds" in the context of coffee, so here's "ground" instead. I don't know if it's exactly the same vibe, but it's a nice moment.

Eli got home late that afternoon to find Laz and Django out in the yard. Laz, appealingly scruffy, was wearing a sleeveless undershirt and driving wooden stakes into the ground with a long-handled mallet. Django was throwing a tennis ball into the lake and laughing uproariously as the dogs dove after it.

"What ritual is this?" Eli asked, only half in jest. Laz waved toward a piece of paper that had been set on the stoop and weighed down with a rock. It was one of his plans, consisting of scratchy lines and a lot of math. "You weren’t serious about building a deck?"

The doorman wasn’t impressed. “You gotta understand, lots of guys show up here looking for Scarlett. She’s one of those femmes fatales.” Jaime Croft was familiar with Scarlett Arbuthnot’s power. Seventeen years ago, back in their hometown of Musgrove, Virginia, she’d felled Jaime with a look. It had been like something out of a rom-com she would’ve mocked. But unlike in the movies, when she’d had him in her thrall, she’d ground his heart to bits. Look, heartbreak was bad enough, but most of the time, you could lick your wounds and forget. Forgetting hadn’t been an option here.

#FridayFling "grounds" I did actually have a few "grounds" (ending in s), but none of those passages were any fun, whereas "ground" (singular) gave me far too much choice. Lotta people getting knocked down in this manuscript

This November, Massachusetts will see *9* statewide ballot questions, a historic number. But we’ve got you covered.

✅VOTE YES ON 1 to expand the public records law to cover the Governor and the Legislature. We’re the only state in the country that doesn’t do that already. Let the sunlight in.

✅VOTE YES ON 2 to enable public defenders to collectively bargain. Every worker deserves to have a union, and public defenders, who are often overworked and underpaid, should be no exception.

❌VOTE NO ON 3 to prevent private equity billionaires from rigging our election system in their favor. Top-two primaries empower corporate PACs and self-funders, disadvantage grassroots candidates, and turn MAGA voters into election kingmakers.

✅VOTE YES ON 4 to enable voters to register to vote or update their registration on Election Day. No eligible voter should be turned away due to a clerical error, and this reform is one of the most proven ways to increase voter turnout.

❌VOTE NO ON 5 to protect our state’s ability to invest in health care, transportation, and public education. The rich would get millions in tax rebates, while the rest of us suffer from underfunded public services.

⚪VOTE how you want on 6. Question 6 fell shy of our endorsement threshold: our members valued land and water conservation, but were worried about the dedication of existing funds as opposed to new ones.

✅VOTE YES on 7 to enable more starter homes across the Commonwealth. We have a housing crisis, and large lot size requirements mean fewer homes are able to be built.

❌VOTE NO on 8 to protect our state’s cannabis laws. We said NO to the war on drugs back in 2016, and we shouldn’t turn back time and destroy local economies.

✅VOTE YES ON 9 to protect our state’s landmark gun safety law, which cracked down on ghost guns, banned machine gun conversion devices, and strengthened gun violence data collection.

She caught up on the details of the war from Aral and Kou and the controlled newsvids. What counts were allied, who was known to be held hostage and where, what units were deployed on each side and which were ripped apart and scattered to both; where fighting had taken place, what damages, which commanders had renewed oath... knowledge without power. No more, she judged, than her intellectualized version of Bothari's endless running; and even less useful for distracting her mind from unbroken concentration on all the horrors and disasters, past or impending, that she could presently do nothing about.
