11/ Bottom line: this remains a serious but contained outbreak. There may be more cases among passengers because symptoms can take weeks to appear, but the risk to the broader public remains extremely low and the virus continues to behave exactly how experts would expect Andes hantavirus to behave.

People shocked Moderna explored a mRNA #hantavirus vaccine don’t understand infectious disease preparedness. Hantaan & Seoul viruses are endemic in South Korea & cause Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome. Vaccines for priority pathogens are developed long before the public hears about them.

I think this is really important: People often seem to assume a pathogen can either spread efficiently or not, like some on/off switch. But that's not really how it works. Many pathogens are shitty at spreading except under certain circumstances. This may turn out to be a case of such circumstances.

It is beyond insulting for @aaas.org to plan to host Brian Greene, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, for a plenary talk at #AAAS2026, then cancel it the day before, only for the replacement to insist Greene was a “good scientist” and that he wished we could all hear from him.
