Oct 12th - While working on a documentary, Steve Zisssou's best friend, Esteban du Plantier, was eaten alive by a "jaguar shark". 📽️📅 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
4 Screenshots from the movie "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" (2004): First, two men in matching blue uniforms stand on a boat with rocky cliffs in the background, one wearing a red beanie and holding a harpoon gun. The subtitle reads, "October 12th. Esteban and I explore the blue reefs beyond the peninsula." Second, a man is pictured swimming in turbulent water with the words "ESTEBAN WAS EATEN" overlaid in yellow text. Third, two men in formal attire sit at a long table in a grand room adorned with a mural, with one asking, "What would be the scientific purpose of killing it?" Fourth, the same scene continues as the other man responds with the single word, "Revenge."

I have 30 something Trump neighbors. They're lost. Utterly. For them to even admit any kind of mess up would be astronomically unprecedented. You can't sway their diseased ideas. You can't coerce a cancer.

My favorite cheese I’ve ever had was a buffalo Camembert, but pound for pound, on volume consumed in my lifetime, it’s gotta be my girl, white cheddar. I miss cheese. (I’ve developed or maybe discovered a lactose issue 😕)

Finding Common Cause with differing opinions requires they at least share the same reality. We've spent the past decade moving farther and farther away from that. I don't know how you find common cause with people who think the vaccine connects you to the internet and essential oils cure cancer.

gift advice from someone who's never left a wooden horse outside a city as a trap: Create a doc on your phone called Gift Ideas, and when a Gift Idea for anyone (literally anyone!) pops into your head, immediately write it down in your notes doc under that person's name.

I think my most anti car as a car person take is that most anti car infrastructure should just brick your vehicle. Like I'm sorry, but if you try to cut into a bike lane on a straight road it shouldn't be a stick that bends out of the way, it should be a solid post that makes the car dump it's guts.

Quick Tip: "Don't speak ill of the dead" means dont demean, or spread lies, or speak malicious untruth about dead people, who cant defend themselves Accurately describing someone's life and legacy is not "speaking ill" It's the truth - which is self justifying in that it is the truth!

The idea that we shouldn’t speak ill of the dead seems ridiculous to me. What more important time is there to set the public memory of the good or bad a person has put into the world than when they die. It’s the gift we give to those we loved, and the bill due for those who made others miserable.

Jul 12th - Several coffins, including one containing Orlok, were loaded onto a ship. When it arrived in Wisborg, the entire crew was dead. 📽️📅 Nosferatu (1922)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Nosferatu" (1922): First, an intertitle on a black screen with pale blue-green text reading “We’ve looked everywhere…not a living soul on board.” Second, a shadowy sepia-toned shot of a man with curly hair and a cloak reading from a large book below deck on a ship, surrounded by ropes and dim wooden structures. Third, a yellow-tinted close-up of a handwritten ship’s log entry labeled “Varna – July 12.” with English subtitles at the bottom reading “Varna — July 12. Crew — besides myself the captain:”
