My favorite R.E.M. album, Automatic For the People, came out 34 years ago today. (New Adventures in Hi-Fi is a VERY CLOSE 2nd) Fun Fact: For my weekly political talk show at KUGS-FM in Bellingham (The Democratic Circus), my theme music was the intro to Ignoreland. youtu.be/Wa_Y7cE61sw?...

Our writing program schedules a week of student conferences for each major project. Student conferences can be intense and tiring but I’m considering not leaving feedback on drafts and they can come discuss their drafts w/me in person if they want feedback.

Do you think TN is really bad at the death penalty or someone is purposefully doing it wrong (like the nurse who stole fentanyl and replaced it with saline at the Yale fertility clinic).

I’m reading Yangsze Choo’s The Fox Wife and the descriptions of male shapeshifting foxes remind me a lot of a guy I know from undergrad… if he is actually a shapeshifting fox that would explain a lot.

The polarization b/t students b/t "i'm going to use AI no matter what you say b/c the WORLD is going toward AI and the FUTURE is AI and you're a luddite," and "AI is cringe and I want to use my own brain that I'm paying $15k+/year to strengthen" is dramatic/astonishing

I like this hopefulness, but I'm scared that the "general public" sees things differently. I mean, not voting for Harris due to the price of eggs after forcibly refusing Trump in 2020 was not where I saw things going. The media/social media landscape is fucked to a degree that it wasn't in 1974.

“The rise may also be attributed to the use of AI to identify books to ban. Particularly in Texas, where state legislation was difficult to understand and apply, AI was used to identify books for removal. In several cases, AI recommended banning books that were banned elsewhere, creating a snowball effect for frequently banned books while the expertise of librarians and the communities they serve are ignored.”

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
