When Toni Morrison said “If you find a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it” I think what she was really getting at was “computer, make video game character have my face”

To me, it suggests an alternate narrative (Judas's narrative) where Jesus is a religious leader who is losing touch with his message and drifting toward being given a mansion with guards at the gates to keep out the poor. If we assume these to be events that really happened.

Something unprecedented happened during my visit to the Gulf. For the first time in 20 years in Congress, I was denied entry to U.S. military facilities and even meetings with military leaders. An order from Hegseth - that applies to both parties - to hide the cost of the war.

When you get off the bus it's customary to say to the driver "You appeared to me in my dream as a shimmering resplendent tower of light and in that moment I knew that everything was going to be okay"

Where I come from, you do it when you get *on* the bus. Then on the bus, you have to smile at the driver beatifically while humming a single note in unison with the other riders

If the government gives everyone a $5k check, what they're really doing is requiring everyone to take out a $5k loan, which we will all have to repay, with no control over how or when we pay it, and no guarantee about the interest rate.

But also, the story is probably apocryphal. At best, it's a thing one person said to Dinesen, which might have really been a reaction to being asked a stupid question. I.e. it might have really meant, "You're boring."

Sandra Newman @sannewman.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
This sticks with me partly because this species of boringness has devoured so much of our lives. Modern people are trained in childhood to submit to being bored by power. And generally, when someone is boring you, they're not to be trusted.

Concord Housing Authority put high-tech sensors in rentals. Lawsuit claims it’s surveillance.
Devices made by the company Minut can monitor noise levels or smoking, without a camera. The ACLU says they are akin to continuous warrantless searches by the government, and an invasion of privacy.
