Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

When I set out to fact check “The Cities That Said Yes to Drugs” which argues that harm reduction may increase overdoses, I expected some cherry picking and misdirection. But not to find basic math errors and debunked right wing talking points asserted as fact in the Atlantic’s print edition.

Alert to Canadian Academics: The parliamentary committee report on criteria for grants (i.e. EDI) is out. It’s not good. So not a time to get too comfortable with how things are going here compared to elsewhere. Need to push back on this. EDI makes for better science. It’s not a tradeoff

We are delighted to welcome Dr Ryan McNeil, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Harm Reduction Research at Yale School of Medicine, who will speak on “Slow violence and North America’s overdose crisis.”
Dr McNeil’s research examines how social, structural, and environmental forces shape risk and harm among people who use drugs. His work focuses on harm reduction, addiction treatment, supervised consumption services, housing and overdose prevention, and approaches to managing stimulant use disorders. His research has informed policy and practice as harm reduction interventions, including supervised consumption services and safe supply, have expanded.

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.

Are you a South Asian youth or young adult using drugs in BC?
You are eligible for the South Asian Photovoice (SAP) research study. Join a paid photovoice research project where you'll take photos of your daily life and participate in two individual interviews, two focus groups (optional), and photography to help us better understand substance use among South Asian young people. Interviews will take 1–1.5 hours and focus groups will take 1.5–2 hours. This is a UBC study.
You may qualify for this study if you:
•are South Asian between 19–35 and live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia
•are currently using drugs (i.e., opioids, stimulants, benzos, aprty drugs)
•can communicate in English

Participation is voluntary
You will receive $240 for your participation over the course of the study.
