Starting next week pools are gonna be closed on weekdays in Sac while temps are still in the 100s. One may think “Huh maybe we should raise the tickets above $3-5$ so we can keep the pools open” But user fees are inequitable. So in the spirit of ensuring equal access the pool will be inaccessible.

I wish we could shake libs out of the consensus position that the progressiveness of a tax policy can be solely evaluated by looking at one side of the ledger I have had many conversations like this “This tax is regressive” >But the revenue is being spent progressively “Had not considered this”

Despite claims of pedestrian and bike oriented development, which I guess means some bike lanes, Treasue Island SF still feels equally if not more car oriented than other SF neighborhoods. Pleasant, if desolate, but still with much potential.

I keep thinking about drunk driving penalties in Latvia (BA limit .05, .02 for new drivers). As of 2022, if you're caught with a BAC of .15 or refuse a test, your car is confiscated & either auctioned or donated to Ukraine. This new policy has (unsurprisingly) reduced DUIs

At the heart of many of the U.S.’s problems is lack of mobility: In the 19th century 1 in 3 people moved each year. Today 1 in 13 do so. Our reduced mobility flows from our profound failure over the past 50 years to build new homes in areas of economic opportunity. It’s strangling us as a nation.🧵

I don’t like the “people are voting with their feet” line about California and NYC’s population loss/decline. People aren’t voting with their feet, they’re losing the game of musical chairs. To the extent population is falling, it’s due to shrinking household sizes, not vacancy. Demand remains high.

If the owner of a single-family home rented to an immigrant family of six kicks them all out to put the house on the market for sale, and then a rich family of two empty-nesters buys it, the population of that lot has dropped by two-thirds. So clearly it doesn’t need any more housing.
