For #TextileTuesday here’s a lovely #tapestry c1500 depicting #January in #BurrellCollection showing a wealthy family host a guest - who they’ve sat in the best seat next to the fire. It was lent by Mrs Burrell to the 1901 Glasgow International Exhibition #textilehistory
Woven tapestry with an interior scene on the left; a visitor ‘Jenuari’ in a fur-lined gown sits at a table in front of a large fire and is served food and drink by a wealthy family, a mille-fleur tapestry in background, a dog in the foreground. On the right an exterior scene with a man riding a horse, another collecting firewood, and five men playing hockey in the foreground.

For this week’s #Tudor Sunday is a stunning bed head in #BurrellCollection made for #HenryVIII and his fourth wife #AnneofCleves
An oak bedhead with carved, painted and gilded decoration. The central panel has an inscription describing Henry as King of England and France, Lord of Ireland, and Head of the Church of England, and the date ‘1539’. The left-hand panel bears the Royal motto ‘DIEU ET MON DROIT’ (‘God and my Right’); the right-hand panel the ‘AH’ monogram for Anne and Henry.

Centuries ago, many astronomical books included moving parts to help readers interpret the world around them. This biscuit recreates a diagram from Sacrobosco’s ‘De Sphaera’ (c.1550). It could be used to calculate the changing length of daylight hours through the year. 🍪
Two biscuits stacked on top of one another, designed to look like a rotating diagram from an early modern astronomical book. The lower biscuit is circular and features a series of horizontal lines and tiny numbers in an early modern font. The top biscuit is roughly in the shape of boat: the 'mast' area reads 'zenith'; the main body of the shape features tiny figures in historical dress holding astronomical instruments and a Latin motto reading 'Nulla dies sine linea'.

A section of William Morris's "Trellis" wallpaper. A blue backgrounded pattern of a green trellis and fat green rose stems, with green leaves and pink blooms. The outside of the bonnet is yellow and has a brim going around the face, tied together with a ribbon bow below chin, the fabric and the ribbon is a lovely contrasting color of robins egg blue. The brim is decorated with smaller bows on each sides at ear level. The backside of the bonnet has some kind of skirting going on, not sure on accurate term, hanging below the flat back cap.
