Absolutely loved this. The few changes made sense from a narrative standpoint. Pretty sure it was shot on film, it looked beautiful, emphasising the importance of light and Fuyuko’s perception of it. Found the scenes between Fuyuko and Hijiri the strongest, esp the emotional climax near the end.

Having real #MeToo flashbacks today, what with various news stories going around, and thinking a lot about how women were encouraged to rip themselves open and show off our trauma, in all its Technicolor glory, so that men might begin to believe us

Just found out that one of my favourite novels, All The Lovers in the Night by Mieko Kawakami, has been adapted as a movie and is screening in Amsterdam next week. Bought a ticket and now it's sold out, so I guess I got the last ticket!! I feel lucky for once!!!
Screenshot from the movie theater website.
Movie description in English reads:

Fuyuko is a freelance proofreader who lives her life in solitude, spending her days correcting mistakes and getting drunk on her own. When she meets Mitsutsuka, a soft-spoken physics teacher and fellow loner, the two develop a friendship that may prove to be life-changing for both. Visually gorgeous, delicate drama that finds beauty within the quiet pacing of daily life. Based on the popular eponymous novel by KAWAKAMI Mieko.

Charli xcx is finally coming back to Amsterdam for a gig and it's at the Ziggo Dome??! Knew she blew up with brat but still the scale is crazy to me, might not even be able to get tickets. Throwback to 2013 when she opened for Ellie Goulding and I was the only person in the crowd who knew her songs.
Charli xcx on stage singing into a mic in hazy blue and purple light, lot of fog machine. 2013 Paradiso Amsterdam. Photo taken by me.Picture from the same gig. Less fog and more light. You can she she is wearing a long sleeved black crop top with two red hearts on the front (the brand is Lazy Oaf I believe) and a high waisted white, red and black tartan pleated skirt. Nobody's Fool 🧵🦋☀️ #art
a digital drawing of Dolly Parton as the tarot card "the fool", based on the song Dumb Blonde. Instead of blithely walking toward the edge of the cliff, she walks away from it, her little dog Crackerjack at her feet. She holds a multi-colored bindle over her shoulder, with a spook of thread poking out, leading to the needle held aloft in her hand. She wears a purple-blue jumpsuit with a sheer neckline and voluminous sleeves. The whole suit is bedazzled and there is a scene of Icarus falling from the heavens into the sea on her lower half. The border is pink, with a repeating pattern of butterflies, sparkly crying eyes, rhinestones, hands with crossed fingers, flowers, broken hearts, and pocket watches.

Honestly, museums should consider reinstating the blanket bans on solo exhibitions of living fashion designers that used to be commonplace. They have *always* been ethically dicey, even for well behaved designers. And today's well behaved designer could be tomorrow's poster boy for bad behavior....

What I always hope to find at an antique market: an 18th century fashion plate for cheap.
Fashion plate from Gallerie des Modes et Costumes Français, 1779, showing a woman wearing a robe à la polonaise. Her hair is done up tall and topped with a cap. In her left hand a parasol, in her right hand a closed fan.

The description at the bottom of the plate reads: Polonaise de toile bleue et blanche vermicelée garnie à plat de bandes de toile peinte de toutes couleurs sur fond blanc.

Laurent Pêcheux, Marchioness Margherita Sparapani Gentili Boccapadule in her natural history cabinet, 1777 (Museo di Roma, Palazzo Braschi)
“On 1777 Laurent Pécheux portrayed the Marquise Margherita Sparapani Gentili in her Natural History Cabinet. Dressed in a refined gown à l’anglaise, the noblewoman points with one hand toward the butterfly collection, while with the other she holds a mulberry branch on which a small caterpillar is moving. The Egyptian-style furnishings and the furniture with decorations derived from ancient models—likely designed by Piranesi—along with the two ancient statues of the Silenus and the Cestiarius, the machine for electrical experiments and the other for creating a vacuum, all combine to create a “museum-like” setting in which every detail speaks to the noblewoman’s interests and outlines her intellectual personality—certainly unusual among Roman women of the late 18th century.” https://www.museodiroma.it/it/infopage/leggera-ma-non-troppodetail showing butterfly collectiondetail showing collection of corals, shells, and vasesdetail showing shells and electrical machine

A gouache on parchment drawing of a young white woman with dark eyes and curly brown hair, standing sideways (facing to the viewer's left) but with her head turned over her left shoulder so that her full face is visible. She wears a white cap and a blue gown laced at the front over a gauzy white blouse. Her left arm is bent at a 90-degree angle, supporting the palette through which her left thumb is thrust. There is a clutch of at least 6 paintbrushes in her left hand, emerging from under the palette. Behind her, at the right edge of the painting, is an easel with a canvas on it.

The digitalisation of historical records used to be a net positive. But with the rise of AI, digitalised records now run the risk of being scraped, which leads to misinterpretations and erasure of key information. You cannot replace historical analysis with a machine.
