Something I wish more people understood: part of the point of shock-and-awe grant terminations at NIH and NSF has been to make scientists and university administrators afraid to speak out against the administration. And it's working. But, some of us were never going to get a grant from them anyway.

‘A whole body of health-equity research is being disappeared’ — why I resigned from the NIH
As federal support vanishes for research addressing the root causes of health disparities in the United States, we are left with a dangerous void and an urgent need to rethink science funding.

honestly I am in a state of grief over what NIH has become that grief is borne of 30+ years of NIH support via the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) and then R01 grants likewise I've served on NIH study sections as an ad hoc reviewer, regular member, and chair none of this is normal

NIH will no longer list NIH grant opportunities through the NIH Guide. Sure, grants.gov was duplicative. But grants.gov is shitty. And NIH's Guide was less shitty. Not a huge deal. But just one more example of exec branch consolidation and NIH enshittification grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Russell Vought has unilaterally decided today that he simply won’t allow anyone outside of NIH to receive research funding. $15 billion in NIH funding is now locked down. If not reversed, it will also take down many Universities in the United States. Forget new cancer treatments or vaccines.

With NIHs new 6-grant/PI cap (incl resub) we’re locked out for a year. We submitted duplicates bc FOAs were being pulled mid-sub & were told to submit to the parent. I get that POs are overwhelmed, but we’re all trying to stay afloat. MultiPI collabs will suffer. Welp, guess I’ll get my wkends back.

June was a whirlwind for our post-bacc program. The grant that funds us was terminated 😣 But we had an amazing symposium & celebrated our scholars going to grad school🎉 🎓 Now the Ten Simple Rules paper authored by our scholars is finally published 🙌🏾 journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...
A termination notice for a post-baccalaureate research program that reads “This project is terminated effective 07/31/2025. Research programs based primarily on artificial and non-scientific categories, including amorphous equity objectives, are antithetical to the scientific inquiry, do nothing to expand our knowledge of living systems, provide low returns on investment, and ultimately do not enhance health, lengthen life, or reduce illness. Worse, so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion ("DEI") studies are often used to support unlawful discrimination on the basis of race and other protected characteristics ICO's, which harms the health of Americans. Therefore, it is the policy of NIH not to prioritize such research programs.
Therefore, no additional funding will be awarded for this project, and all future years have been removed. If appropriate, UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA may request funds to support patient safety and animal welfare to support an orderly phaseout of the project.”The 2025-2026 cohort of MINDS post-baccalaureate scholars, their near-peer graduate student mentors, faculty mentors, program directors, and mini-MINDS participants standing in front of a project screen that reads 2025 MINDS post-baccalaureate research symposiumA full seminar room of faculty, students and community members listening to the oral presentation by a second year MIND scholar.A Ten Simple Rules perspective paper “Ten simple rules for thriving in a post-baccalaureate research program” authored by

Current NIH funding slump represents: - Research labs closing - PhD students abandoning their dreams. - Trial participants left to their own devices mid study. - A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. - Minority health research terminated. Etc.
