NEW PAPER: In a new paper, jointly published in @agu.org Earth's Future & @ametsoc.org BAMS, and co-led by Melissa Kenney, @costasamaras.com and me, 175 authors outline priorities to guide the future of scientific assessments of climate change in the United States. 🧵

One of my mantras to students and mentees: you have to be good enough to be in the room/conversation. Lots of people are that good. But if you are in the room/conversation, at least you have a shot.

I would have replied, but replies seem to be locked. So now I quote post with an answer: We’re all still here. We are not facing global food system collapse. We’re just choosing to no longer engage with a shouty, anonymous, doomer account because there’s work to do and we’re doing it.

Final “AI in research” thought for the AM: I was on a team call recently and actually had to write in the chat “We should not be citing articles we have not read.” Forget worrying about hallucinated bibliographies. That can only happen if people aren’t reading. Worry about basic research practice

The more AI in academia/research discourse I see, the more I think that original thinkers who work hard (a group in much shorter supply than anyone wants to admit) are going to become even more rare and insanely valuable. What y’all call inefficiency is what I call the foundations of creativity.

I’ve tried to use AI for drafting simple content (no chance I will use it for my meaningful writing) and it has never added value…in fact it usually wastes my time as I have to rewrite most of the text. But then, I can discern crap from good writing… www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/o...

Whatever you might think about democratic socialism, calling a $15 million effort to discredit it a “war” fails to capture how tiny this amount of money is in relation to any given cycle of campaign spending. It’s basically a rounding error with a press release www.nytimes.com/2026/08/06/u...

This is an important point. While some hard limits (cannot be overcome by any means) to adaptation might be identified through biophysical research, identifying most hard limits and all soft limits (we hit because we choose not to do things that are needed) requires actually trying to adapt.

I disagree with this a bit: youth sports went to hell when parents were sold on the idea that professionalizing their children would make them viable college athletes. In admissions, kids/parents drive this far more than colleges. (Informed by my experience as a college athlete/dean/dad/coach)

While I agree that the conversion of Balogun’s red card suspension into a probationary period is shaky at best, I grow weary of the use of “unprecedented” to describe it. FIFA did the same thing for Ronaldo to let him play the opener in the group stages. Where was the UEFA/global outrage then?

A lot of the “Trump got Balogun a pardon” reporting seems rather credulous. I’d believe Trump made a call. But organizing a team of lawyers? To do what, exactly? I’d love a lot more sourcing…

Lisa was one of the CLA’s for my chapter in AR6, and she is right on here. She speaks from experience because AR6 was affected by COVID and the last authors’ meeting virtual. It did not go well and it was hard to engage in the homestretch of the report. In person is not ideal but it is critical.

I am going to reject the framing of the question - the 90s were a lot of things, but they were not unitary. The start of the 90s was, for American kids, the end of the Cold War, the first Gulf War, a reaction against "greed is good," etc. So sure, Sounds Like Teen Spirit works. But...1/2
