Our 10 year old, who loves reading, still wants us to read to him before bed—it’s one of the loveliest moments of the day There’s something quasi-magical about reading the words out; I like to inject a little drama into the voicing, lol Am currently reading him “The Eyes & The Impossible” (Eggers)

I'm getting several of these emails a day now: an AI agent has found my online profile and emailed me a manuscript, trying—poorly—to make a case that the work is somehow central to my research program. More and more of the papers are themselves utter AI slop. DON'T FUCKING DO THIS, PEOPLE.

Ever feel like a fish out of water? Meet the giant mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri). Found on the muddy shores of mangroves in parts of Southeast Asia, it uses its pectoral fins to “skip” or “walk” across mudflats. Photo: wcyongwc, CC BY-NC 4.0, iNaturalist

Many bats pair mouth-emitted sonar with big ears, but the leaf-nosed bats use these specialized sound-sensing structures to move through the dense foliage where food is abundant & predators fear to tread. And because they use their NOSES, they can do it with their mouths full of fruit! 😄

Alt: Santalabuw Honduran White Bat: A white poof of bat with dark eyes and yellow leaf-shaped nose. The ears are wiggling a mile a minute, just vibrating and shifting direction faster than you can see. It seems almost to hiccup, the wings closed and pressed against the chin & mouth. It dangles from some jungle greenery.

So as the fruit-bats go about their route, munching on figs or other fruits, they have to evade predators, avoid collision with leaves & limbs. The "Old World" fruit bats acquired better vision, but for fruit bats in the Americas (Phyllostomidae), they focused on specialized noses.

From Bat Conservation International: a moment of Zen with the white-lined broad-nosed bat (Platyrrhinus lineatus) a fruit-eating bat native to South America. We think the 'racing stripes' are camouflage, breaking up the bat's outline to avoid predators. Let's talk about the fruit-bat /lifestyle/.

Just a friendly reminder that plague is prevalent, including in the western United States (see, prairie dogs), with multiple cases annually. It is also highly treatable and, yes, lab acquired infections (incl. fatal cases) have happened over the years, including e.g., UChicago.

This, I think, is the question that higher education in the USA got blindsided with and thinks is going to go away after the Trump administration. But if you look at the way research grants from the government got gutted in the last year, it’s going to be really hard to restart.

🪶 Rob has chosen #WingsOpenNotFlying as #BirdOfTheDay theme; birds with their wing open when not flying Alternative is #Blue, birds with blue in their plumage - I’ll go alt with a Blue Tit perched on a small branch in shade #birdphotography #ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #Stunday
A Blue Tit perched on a small, diagonal willow branch, which comes from the bottom right of the shot and ends in the upper left hand corner. The bird is right of centre of the shot, facing the camera with its head turned to the right so the right side of its head is shown.
The bird has a bright blue crown on its head, its cheeks are white with a black/blue border and eye stripe as well as a line under its short bill. Its underbelly is lemon yellow and its back is green with blue on the wings and tail. Its feet are a bluish grey.
The light on the bird is muted a bit but there is still a shadow of a small branch visible down the centre of the bird. There are three other, out of focus branches in the back ground in the top left, and two towards the bottom right. All follow the direction of the branch the bird is in, more or less.
The background is out of focus grass and vegetation, giving a green and white hue.

Digital palaeoart of an extinct rhino-like mammal called Megacerops, which had a forked bony crest on its nose. He is happily picking bright yellow crabapples of the extinct species Malus florissantensis and using the shape of his head like a basket. I've used bold, ink-like outlines and a colouring style meant to mimic that of Copic markers.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (
