one of the reasons that I warn researchers away from adapting commercial LLMs into their pipeline is that Big Tech has a history of sunsetting popular, usable products and replacing them with worse ones. (i'm trying to ween myself off of google scholar, but it is hard).

The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

... The Batman vs Dracula (2004). Look it's at MOST a 2, was a Direct to DVD tie in, and has some of the weirdest leaps in logic. But there are some horror sections that hold up REALLY well, Peter Stormare is an underrated Dracula, D picks off people 1 by 1, and the ending is great.

Joker's Sinister Smile (2004 Animation)
Alt: 2004 Joker (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) being a vampire with fangs and licking blood off of himself. Joker's skin and hair is pure white, leaving the only darkness as his eyeliner, lipstick, and blood on his face. He's in a room with glowing shelves and the entire scene is cast in a green glow.

We need to stop reaffirming that we don't expect Trump administration figures to face legal accountability for their misdeeds. Expectations produce reality. We need to start creating the expectation that they in fact will—indeed, must—face legal accountability.

One small, but powerful way that LLM's are supercharging scamming is by allowing scammers to write perfect context-appropriate prose - emails, invitations, "hey checking in" - that before AI would have this slightly *off* uncanniness that would alert the victim. No longer!

Maybe one reason we all end up having to pivot to something else is because it's exhausting constantly asking if we're good enough to be the one crab that can get to the top of the barrel at everyone else's expense.

Another terrible thing about this industry contracting is every time someone talented also reports getting laid off, you start hyperventilating because it means more competition from other really good writers in this space. We're all fighting over the tiniest crumbs and it fucking sucks.

A while ago a friend said they were worried about me so they had me join a DND group they knew. Someone had dropped out so a new player was easy enough to add in. And to be clear, I did (and do) enjoy my time there. But due to time zone shenanigans, it starts at 9PM My time and goes until midnight

Norway has solution to this actually, stay at home parents can get their share of the public daycare subsidy as cash, that way parents are not pushed one way or the other. the problem of course is virtually no one on the center or right actually gives a shit about parents

A few people have made the reasonable suggestion that we are living through the backlash to MeToo -- and yes, I do agree with that, at the same time as the backlash to BLM and the advances in gay rights. It's backlash all the way down.

I get these are legal documents, not documents of the heart and soul. but does DA really think, if he's right about how dangerous what he's doing is, that anyone will give him credit for saying "now, to warn you guys yet again, when i push this button, we might all die"? that's not how ppl work.

The plan: Build a 200-room, 300-bathroom data center, 70% subsidized by federal and local governments. Make it accessible to the train. Build a supermarket for the 800 people doing 24/7 on-site maintenance. Call it the future of technology. Make OpenAI pay for the rest. Then let people move in.
