Yūsai-san examined an imperial kōrozen-no-gohō in the possession of Kōryū-ji (広隆寺), and managed to reproduce the dye used in creating the garment. Because the dye behaves mysteriously in different lights, it is known as 'maboroshi-no-zome' (幻の染 'phantom dyeing'). #Japan

Olivia C. caught baby elephant "Matope" at the Dallas Zoo having the time of his life. His name means "muddy water" in Swahili. A classic case of nominative determinism: a water-loving elephant named Muddy Waters. Matope reminds you to hydrate. Mother Mlilo is there to make SURE you do. ❤️🫂🐘

This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it to me late one night, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic. #Writing #Living #Creativity #RayBradbury #BookSky

Seed Shanty
Song birds sing a sea shanty aboard a schooner boat loaded to the deck with bags of seed: “Seed, Seed, Seed! All the seed we need!”

Captain Robin Cornwallis has seen something through his spy-glass which causes him grave concern, even as the singing continues (“On this we are agreed…”)Spyglass view: A pirate ship approaches. At every level of the ship, it is crawling with scurvy, rascally squirrels, each with their eyes aimed at the bird’s ship. “Seed, seed, seed!” the crew continues.

That bathhouse dig gave up my favourite Roman small find: dozens of intaglios out of the drains, semi-precious stones worked loose from bathers' rings when the hot water softened the glue. People lost their jewellery in the sauna and archaeology got a gemstone catalogue.

A few places on this beautiful planet that made me feel (and look) small.
A selfie of me standing on the edge of a tall, rugged red rock cliff overlooking a vast canyon landscape and the Green River some 1,300 ft below, all under a soft, cloudy, golden sky.The House group of sequoia trees with 6'3" me standing right in front of them for scale as they tower over me out of the frame.A distant selfie of me standing in nearly waist deep water of the middle of the Rio Grande River with massive canyon walls on either side and clear blue sky overhead. A photo of me standing near the base of the powerful Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland. I am center frame, wearing a gray and orange jacket, and standing on light-colored rocks. I am dwarfed by the entire frame filled with white water plunging down the falls.

I took a pic of some stardust that was the oldest thing I’ll ever see at the NHM in London this summer!
A vial with a teeny tiny bit of white dust at the bottom behind a big magnifying glass in a museum.
Star dust
Cold Bokkeveld meteorite (carbonaceous chondrite, CM2)
The smudge of white powder at the bottom of this little tube is the oldest thing you will ever see.
We know this because it contains a chemical signature different to anything else in our Solar System.
Known as pre-solar grains, this mix of microscopic diamonds and other minerals was created billions of years ago by a generation of stars predating the Sun.
It was extracted from the meteorite displayed here by one of our scientists.
Observed fall in 1838, Koue Bokkeveld Mountains, Western Cape, South Africa
Donated to the Museum in 1839
