My speech from the conference debate on 'Zionism is Racism’ motion

The ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion has passed at Green Party conference. While there are many parts of the motion I can agree with, there are some that I could not, so I did not vote for it. Here is a joint statement from the Green Party leadership team and all of us Green MPs:
Joint statement:

As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.
We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.
We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.
We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.
And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.
We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

CpG islands are fascinating both from molecular mechanism point of view and in terms of evolutionary conservation in the context of elevated mutation rate of CpG dinucleotides in mammalian genomes. Lots of new insights from cool technical and theoretical advances from @robklose.bsky.social + lab.

Thus the statement sets a benchmark that can never be met. The truth is we do have a fundamental idea of how cell specification works- stable gene expression states - just the details are complex and not fully established. They may never be completely resolved...3/4

but I don't think it's a very meaningful statement. why would one expect such a fundamental account to exist? what would it even look like? If the idea is something like an atom, predictable with a few (insoluble) equations, it's a completely unrealistic goal for a biological system. 2/4

Interesting article on philosophy of biology. a quote: "despite such a capability to describe cells, we lack a fundamental account of how molecular interactions generate cellular identity and function." Sounds very grand... 1/4 elifesciences.org/articles/112...

Whether the uniform style expected by journals directly reduces novelty is an interesting question. It would be a cool experiment for a journal to encourage complete novelty of form and style to see if this also led to more novelty in experimental approaches too.

Interesting article, but I think the more fundamental issue is that science, including science writing, generally rewards conformity both to style and received wisdom. www.nature.com/articles/d41... www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This is a very interesting discussion. Like many scientists I got inspired by many post hoc narratives of discovery eg Galileo, Darwin and the Beagle, that turn out to be much more complicated, and also falsely representing how science works. Perhaps the truer stories would be just as inspiring?
