Excellent! We once run a giant timer on the screen for questions. 30 seconds to ask your question. It worked like a charm. Also, if this is an in person event and people have lapel mics, make sure they are turned off if they decide to pop into the washroom before the session. Hard lesson, that one.

This is another in my occasional series of posts on stuff you might not be told but you will not in fact learn by osmotic immersion in the Academic Ether. (See also my posts on writing job applications, giving a job presentation and what to expect in a job interview.) This time: how to chair a conference session. my review of an exhibition at the Barbican in London - it closes on 6 September!

big saviour architecture: In Other Worlds, sort of
I went to see In Other Worlds last week, the multimedia installation directed by Liam Young at the Barbican in London. I’m still a bit baffled by it, to be honest. photo by me It’s organised into six zones that you walk through one after the other. There’s a lot of video-like digital animation on big screens; there are some sculptural textile masks and scale models of buildings; there’s lots of fake rock and some presumably real tree trunks; there are life-size mannequins and various Barbie-sized dolls, all costumed; there is a lot of choral drone music; there’s an immersive 3D projection and a light installation.

Insufferable Tools and critical tactics
I just finished reading Sarah Sharma’s new book Insufferable Tools: Feminism Against Big Tech. It’s a sustained and wonderful piece of feminist technoscience writing, from a media studies scholar determined to forge a structural/strategic analysis of the white patriarchy that surrounds so much of contemporary digital tech and its hype. In one way, that white patriarchy is all too obvious.

‘the image’ and cultural geography
I've just been browsing a fascinating collection of short essays, gathered by Ben Anderson and Vickie Zhang in the summer of 2025. They invited contributions on 'the promise of cultural geography' and put all the responses into an open-access book which you can download here. It's a wonderful initiative in many ways, not least in its openness to contributions and its publication as open access.
