I'm so so very tired of getting a constant stream of emails re my new (not yet out!) book that begin like this 🫩 I guess I'm just going to have to set up an email filter for the phrase "I recently came across" and "especially caught my attention"
An AI-generated spam email that reads: Dear Amanda,

I recently came across Digital Photography After AI, and I was immediately struck by the way you approach AI-generated images not simply as a new technological development, but as something that forces us to reconsider what photography itself means. The question of whether an image that looks indistinguishable from a photograph should be understood as photography at all creates a fascinating starting point for examining the boundaries between image-making, technology, and representation.

What especially caught my attention was the historical scope of the book.

i'm tired of seeing “escalating ai capabilities” reported as if it is a fact. let's be clear this claim does not rest on transparent, well-defined, independently validated metrics, but is inferred from model behaviours elicited by humans and measured through opaque, poorly designed evaluations

"Creating the third-largest university plant collection" may seem celebratory, but remember: this is happening because Duke administration decided to axe the herbarium as a cost-cutting measure. Natural history collections are a precious scientific resource, and too many are at risk of being lost.

I think what I find really depressing about AI in higher education is how so many people didn't even wait for the evidence/research before we decided on telling students "how to use AI responsibly" which often includes things like checking grammar, and obviously, we shouldn't have been

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!

I know it’s rage bait but i finally caved and read it. What an embarrassing take. But it reminded me how US academics—not just admins—incl. many purportedly leftwing ones often don’t see PhDs & postdocs as valued colleagues doing work. It’s not a hobby, friendship or a favor they’re doing you smh.

Yes totally agree with this! It's something that's been bugging me in the quasi-humanities department I'm part of since I started. The more humanities-oriented students think they need to be doing systematic reviews, even when it just doesn't make sense for the research questions
