It annoys me just how much "turn it off and turn it on again" is actually the way to solve 80% of computer/phone/tech issues. On one hand: Actually great because it's simple and easy. On the other: generations of IT dudes being smug because they were right all along.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Our house is three hundred years old. If we hang up a picture we need to decide whether it should align with the floor, the ceiling, the left or the right wall. At the very most, we can pick two out of the four

Irony is dead and has been killed by AI. I searched for papers on cognitive offloading. Next to the search results? The option to have AI generate a short summary. If only there was another way of getting a quick summary of a paper and what the author(s) judged to be most important about it
A screenshot shows the results of a Google Scholar search with the search trends, cognitive offloading ai". Next to each search result is the AI logo indicating that an AI-generated summary could be produced.

Every time a British person uses the phrase "lost the plot" it implies someone else may suddenly find it out and about. You're walking down the rural hedge row when bam, the plot is now a murder mystery involving a vicar's secret second family and the local ornithology club. Good luck mate

Here’s why AI chatbots (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini etc) are unreliable for science content, and terrible as “just a starting point” for science communicators. Unfortunately, this probably isn’t something AI chatbots get much better at… although sloppers will get better at hiding it!

Top is a map of the US with “Google search volume for “eyes hurt” April 3 to April 10 2024” with a hot line running from Texas north east through to Maine. The bottom map shows the path of the total solar eclipse which runs in a lone from Texas through to Maine

It's difficult to (dis)prove and I have no trust in any tool that promises to relate to reliably tell AI from non-AI. A personal conversation about the written work is a necessary step, and then it becomes a workload issue.

One of my fave things in York Minster: a medieval wren stalking a spider. It reminds me that history isn't only kings and battles. Someone, centuries ago, found joy in the same things we still notice today. It's a reminder of how much we have in common over our differences.

A sign that has two concentric rings of text but it's laid out in a confusing way so it looks like the first sentence is "it's against the law to keep alcohol out of the hands of youth" and the second sentence is "supply alcohol to minors."
