Here’s why AI chatbots (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini etc) are unreliable for science content, and terrible as “just a starting point” for science communicators. Unfortunately, this probably isn’t something AI chatbots get much better at… although sloppers will get better at hiding it!

I've probably been the top sunscreen mythbuster online for the last decade, so I have thoughts! It's super cool that sunscreen misinfo is being formally studied! Big props to the authors for recognising this problem. But there's misinfo in the paper, and IMO the main claims aren't well-supported…

I love that @labmuffin.com once again goes into how the coral bleaching thing is not accurate. That particular bit of misinformation makes me angry, especially since Florida just went through a major bleaching event a few years ago that left a species extinct in the wild, purely due to temperature.

A lot of chemical #sunscreen fear is from animal/in vitro studies taken out of context, without comparing exposure in those studies to the actual amounts we're exposed to from sunscreens. Safety limits have massive buffers (100-fold margin of safety, from eg. no observed adverse effect level).

Covid raises risk of heart issues in children more than vaccination
Getting covid-19 for the first time slightly increased the risk of heart inflammation, blood clots and bleeding disorders among children, whereas being vaccinated against the virus was much safer and sometimes protective

It's ironic that this article perpetuates fear about chemical sunscreens being unsafe. Plus the misconception that dermatologists are experts on product safety (that's toxicologists and safety assessors). Also the US blanket recommendation on sunscreen use that's not actually based on evidence...
The American Academy ofDermatology recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days. Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are considered safe by dermatologists.

Next is MUDCAPS from @labmuffin.com and @theecowell.bsky.social, more friends that are bigger deals on instagram so do follow them there if you use it. Here’s a frame from Michelle’s most recent vid which I really liked, even though I have no special interest in cosmetics, I still learnt loads
A graphic showing a mnemonic called MUDCAPS which stands for
Misleading credentials (eg PhD in art history just referring to themselves as ‘Dr’ and talking about health)
Undisclosed everything (if they hide financial conflicts, they are demonstrating they are willing to bend the truth)
Defensive (in response to professional criticism)
Credit (do they say where they have gained their knowledge, from whom eg educational resources)
Authority (appeal to authority, can’t explain their position without relying on their status)
Peers (what company do they keep, are they respected in their fields)
Spotty track record (you can figure this one out)

I want to share two handy mnemonics that can help you identify BS, BS peddlers, and ensure you give yourself the best chance to take in GOOD information The first is CRABS by Jessica Stokes-Parish. We are instagram friends but I don’t think she’s here. She’s great! www.instagram.com/j_stokespari...
A graphic showing the CRABS mnemonic which stands for
Conflict of Interest – eg are they selling what they’re promoting
References – Do they include references so others can check their claims
Author – What is their background, is it relevant? Do they have relevant expertise or publications?
Buzz words – Do they use lots of jargon to sound impressive (ie an episode of the Huberman Lab)
Scope of Practice – Are they misrepresenting their experience online vs real life, ie a junior doctor claiming they are managing complex patients indepdently

Seeing a lot of people recommending sunscreen mists... unfortunately they're really not that effective for applying to your face, sorry! See the cloud lingering in the air? That's sunscreen NOT going on your skin - my experiments estimated that 80-95% of the sunscreen doesn't land.

Dr Michelle Wong - Lab Muffin Beauty Science @labmuffin.com · 11/07/2025
Sigh... no. The commonly used chemical sunscreens are all approved in the EU as well, the differences are pretty minor. US sunscreens aren't much more "toxic" than elsewhere. But the newer filters give formulators more tools, so they can make much nicer sunscreens that you actually WANT to use.

given how many people have replied "get a hat" seemingly in earnest despite the concern being my neck while i am biking, i'm stealing from a recent @labmuffin.com video because apparently not enough of you understand that lots of UV exposure is indirect on account of That's How We Can See Things.
a lovely graphic of a smiling sun happily shooting lasers of death, many of which directly hit a woman standing outside, but many also that bounce off of other things like trees to hit her too. these are indirect lasers of death.a picture of a smiling face under an umbrella labeled: 1.6m = 5'2" (me in chunky shoes)

below is a block of text from diffey b, sun protection: a risk management approach, 2017 which reads:

as an example, we estimate the PF for beach umbrella which has a UV transmittance of 1%, a diameter of 1.6 m and is at a height 1 m above the ground. the SVF is calculated on a horizontal surface located vertically underneath the center of the umbrella, mimicking the UV exposure received by someone stretched out underneath. for a simple structure such as this example, the SVF can be canculated by [math] which equals 0.68. This results in a PF of 2.6, which responds to a transmission of 38%. This value compares favourably with measurements made around the middle fo the day in mid-july in valencia with an umbrella of the same radius and height above the ground, in which a mean transmission of 34% was obtained over the period of measurement. we can see that even when in the shade of direct sunlight, 20% or less of the sky needs to be visible if the protection is to be worthwhile (pf > 10)

Did you see the Choice sunscreen testing results? Here's an SPF deep dive! Key points: Sunscreens are very effective, these results do not indicate you should lose faith in them SPF testing is imprecise - this is an inherent limitation of the test, lots of variation even if nothing's gone "wrong"

Labor won’t act urgently on climate unless it’s forced to
Labor should be aiming at emissions cuts of 70 to 80% by 2030. There is no shortage of feasible, detailed and immediately beneficial policies to do this. But they won’t.

Almost none of this is true - the only phthalates found in cosmetics (outside of DEP which has a very different risk profile from other phthalates) are trace amounts leached from plastic packaging, which would be minimal exposure compared to every other plastic in your life
Phthalates are often used in fragrances, says Barrett,
who studies environmental chemicals and their impact
on pregnancy and child development. "They're very
good at carrying scent and color in products." But they
have been linked to preterm birth in pregnant women
with high levels of the chemical in their bodies.

Related: When I talk about an ingredient being safe, I always get comments saying: "But if it's in 6 different products it'll add up!" "But if you use it every single day for decades, it builds up!" Surprisingly, toxicologists know people can use multiple products, and will use it more than once!
