Eh. The only reason I bothered with Lonesome Dove was the recent re-recording of the audiobook (the previous recording was very poor). I was digging the story until the rape. I wonder how many modern readers get past that.

Adding: this snark is never for audience benefit. If someone thinks the sci-fi is too weird or the horror is too discomforting, they can make their own jokes. Art doing that itself is to prevent others' jokes. The artist says "I'LL laugh so YOU can't make fun of me." And it's so spineless.

she said "you can do anything in fiction as long as the situation afterwards is more interesting that the situation before." since then i have been keeping an eye on character death in fiction. many writers seem to think that character death "raises the stakes" but actually just makes things boring

Got 1.75 episodes into Reacher before deciding I don’t care about Buff Sherlock. Watching X-Men 97 instead and it’s such a campy, entertaining throwback. Much more my style.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

As a pragmatic centrist, I read the Niemöller poem differently. After each group mentioned I pencil in what percentage of the population they are, and if it’s a small number I cross off their names as disposable. Poetry is fine but math wins elections!!

Here's what I think about when I think back on 9/11. The attack happened on the watch of a Republican president who had been warned, repeatedly & explicitly, that an attack was coming. He dismissed those warnings.

On one hand, Millennials *always* had a sense that the world was fucked. Other than the eldest Xennials, our first moment of political consciousness coincided with 9/11 or the GWOT. On the other hand, we were the vanguard of weaponized optimism in the Obama era, and that ALSO never left us.

Dolly Parton did what literally no techbro billionaire would even think of doing: filling her life with good deeds that make people mourn her when she dies. Not one of these assholes would even think of this, they are all right now completely and honestly baffled by the outpouring of love for her.

Maybe I'm in the minority here but if people who support AI are being shamed into silence then it's working. The shame is working as intended. The left's biggest problem is that it's afraid to hurt the feelings of folks who need to have their feelings hurt. Let them experience introspection for once

Lonesome Dove is a perfect example of how “show, don’t tell” is useless advice once you become an advanced writer. As long as your “telling” is fascinating, it will be a joy to read.

How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around) – AHA
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words.

Reminder: 1. You don't need to have an opinion on everything, especially stuff you don't know enough about 2. You don't need to have a PUBLIC opinion on everything 3. It's okay to focus on one or two things and let others take up the slack elsewhere 4. It's okay to take a break when overwhelmed.

Getting real sick of slop midwives pleading for a 'respectful discussion' of AI as relates to the arts. Your use of AI to 'make art' is not respectful. It benefits from stolen art, destroys the planet, and does not make you an artist any more than someone driving 26.2 miles is a marathoner.

The only responsible attitude for liberals and progressives to align on is that all right-wing grievances, claims and believes are not only false, but malicious lies. Nothing passes the mouth of an American conservative in public life that is not meant to harm and destroy the lives of millions.

theres this one tumblr post ive seen talking about that phenomenon but w fiction writing that I think about often
darling of dots feb 24
been stewing on an analytical approach to fiction which call "is this book afraid of me?" and in order to answer this question you determine how hard the book is trying to make sure you don't come after the writer on twitter

the fucked-up part is that specifically notice this in like, BIPOC or queer romances because their authors a) are more likely to be harassed online b) tend to care about writing inclusive and intersectional books more, both of which are totally valid reasons, but unfortunately a book that is scared to be misunderstood is also scared to challenge the reader or allow for too much nuance or grey areas or character flaws and am sorry to say that it often makes for less compelling stories because it means shying away from ambiguities and complexities in an effort to reassure me, the reader, that everyone here is a Good Person engaging in Healthy Behaviours and Relationships

Three panel comic titled Unethical Fiction:
1. Made with AI
2. Printed on human skin
3. The author uses their profits to fund a hate group.

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

The rental car has physical buttons that you have to cycle through and select on the touch screen. Want the fan? Stare at the screen while you push this button three times. No, car manufacturers, I wanted physical buttons, not touchscreens with extra buttons.

Tonight, I’m taking my Greek mother to see the Odyssey. Really hope it goes over better than My Big Fat Greek Wedding (she found it unfunny, which, fair), or in 2005 when I told her Patroclus and Achilles were lovers (she eventually came around, but whoa did she initially act like I blasphemed).

“There are no pure places on the internet, so that’s why I’m still on Substack.” Listen. Not every site is dumping nuclear waste onto the internet. There are plenty that haven’t been poisoned by tech bros, venture capital, fascists, etc. To claim otherwise is cynicism at its worst.
