Fascisation: A Centrist Project. While the political mainstream insists that only the AfD puts society at risk of authoritarian or fascist regression, the last few years say otherwise. The authoritarian turn, which can be understood as a process of fascisation, is enabled by crises internal to liberal democracies: immiseration through declining wages and rising prices, spiralling inequality, the degradation of public infrastructure, a sense that the future has been foreclosed. It is driven not only by the far right’s openly fascist answers to these crises but also by the supposedly liberal centre, which has internalised and normalised new forms of anti-migrant state racism, partly out of conviction and partly out of panic. In trying to weaken the AfD by mimicking it, the centre has predictably only strengthened it.

I get why people are asking “what have we become?” but the answer is “exactly what you’d expect from a decade and a half of the press reciting the spicier bits of Mein Kampf at the public, and our whole ruling class agreeing we need to crack down on the lesser races and their Bolshevik allies”.

Been thinking about the phenomenon - articulated by Daniel Sloss and many others - of men’s desire/fantasy to beat up/kill a rapist, but not to do the work in preventing one. Can’t help but think this plays a part in the ‘stop the boats’ etc movement. youtu.be/0uZFHpEh5So?...

Any lives lost due to this closure should be laid firmly at the feet of the far-right agitators who caused this. The way in which anti-asylum activists are putting more and more people at risk should be a wake up call that it is time to genuinely combat them, rather than pandering to their ideology.

An angry mob of racists went knocking door-to-door in a hotel so that they could yell at and potentially violently attack teenage cricket players who they thought were refugees and the local police apparently concluded that this was totally fine.
« About 30 to 40 people congregated at the Marriot Hotel in Cosham, Portsmouth, on Tuesday evening after false rumours circulated that a coach carrying migrants had arrived.
Sumair Syed, chief operating officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board, said the team reported people "knocking on their doors" during the incident, but the players "behaved responsibly and didn't escalate the situation".
Hampshire Police said officers found no offences had been committed, and the crowd dispersed by about 21:00 BST.
The team went on to play a scheduled match the following day, Syed said. »

Remember: it could be someone you know.
[Scene is a parody of a 1970s Public Information Film. A young girl is going home from school.]

1
[She leaves the school gates].

VOICEOVER:

The world today
is full of people.

2
You meet lots of them every day.

[The girl crosses the road with the help of a LOLLIPOP MAN]

3
LOLLIPOP MAN says ’to camera’ [girl’s POV]:

Mind ‘ow you go, love.

4
But every time you meet one,

[She gets on a bus]

5
BUS DRIVER [also talking to camera]:

That’ll be 40p, please

6
[She enters a sweet shop]

You must always think to yourself:

7
[The kindly looking woman behind the counter hands her a bag of pick n mix]

KINDLY WOMAN:
There y’are, sweet’art...

8
[Voiceover again]:

Could *they* be a person who leaves one-star reviews for things when they get sent the wrong item?

9
[The woman picks up a smartphone to write something]

10
[Cut to a view of her phone screen, it is an Amazon review page for Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro]:

Never Let Me Go
by Kazuo Ishiguro
[one star]
THIS ISN’T A PRIT STICK

11
[Woman looks ‘to camera’ at the girl, sinisterly]

12
[Girl’s terrified face behind the ad’s final text line]:

Always have one-star-reviewers-of-things-for-not-being-other-things sense.
