thought this comment was actually quite perceptive – maybe the realisation is not quite "it's going to imminently kill us all" but rather "there's *literally* no way to control what it does on the way to a goal"

lrt: what absolutely kills me is at the beginning merz (through the adenauer stiftung) took a hard, systematic look at how centre right parties lose to far right parties, concluded (correctly!) that co-opting only sabotages yourself, said, "we won't do that then" and then immediately did that!!

So it turns out that the Equal Earth map that has a lot of people justifiably upset was designed by an American, and he credits other Americans as providing "valuable advice." He made the conscious decision to shade Crimea a different color than the rest of Ukraine. equal-earth.com/data-sources...

France and Germany have proposed a significant reform of the EU's External Action Service, folding much of it into the Commission. In my view a good proposal, and noteworthy because it aims at strengthening EU institutions rather than renationalising. (via @financialtimes.com)
“Embedding the services of the EEAS to a large extent in the Commission’s structures . . . should increase the coherence and effectiveness of foreign policy making,” the two countries write. Paris and Berlin earlier this year set a year-end deadline for options to reform the service, and called for the EU’s 27 leaders to discuss it at a summit next month.

The proposals, laid out in the one-page document ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland that begins tonight, would see the EEAS stripped back in exchange for giving the HRVP increased oversight over external-related policies inside the Commission.

If your vote is undecided in the Clacton by-election this might be the clincher for you
I don’t usually discuss politics on here, it’s rarely worth the grief in our increasingly polarised country. However, I feel compelled to draw attention to point 17 of Count Binface’s newly released 20-point manifesto:
“The hand dryer in the gents’ toilet at the Great Himalayas restaurant, Southport, to be moved to a more sensible position.”
As it happens, the Great Himalayas is my favourite restaurant in Southport, and Natasha and I have eaten there many times.
Having investigated the matter with our friends in the local community, I can confirm that Binface really knows what he’s talking about. At last, a politician addressing the issues that affect ordinary people.

open.substack.com/pub/mariosri... Tldr; I don't think the 1930s/2010-2020s are exceptional, I think it's 1945-1985 that's weird - that's the period where Authoritarian voters *aren't* voting for Authoritarian parties - which I'd describe as the Surprisingly Long Suppression of the Radical Right.
