A young associate recently asked if I was aware of my unusual number of specific sensory opinions about our workplace. Sir, I survived 18 years of terrible big-firm lighting, contaminated government office tap water, and 1950s-era ergonomics. I’m here to be the change I want to see in the world.

On my way into DC federal courthouse, someone was asked if I was a reporter. I took the hint and immediately fixed my hair. (To be fair, it’s very humid).

So much stubborn affection for this strange little airport. The whole thing makes no sense at all in 2026. But I’m always so pleased to land here.

I’m fighting a morning migraine so I’m late for our mandatory morning walk. Cattle dog “shark attack” incoming. (Please note this dog didn’t even like walks when we got her, so she maybe can temper her faux outrage just a little).
Small brown cattle dog with large upright ears stares intently at her owner off camera, poised to jump on owner’s face because this dog is adorable but also savage about her mandatory morning walks.

It’s been 6 years since my biggest supporter and best friend died. I honored her today by doing nothing of importance—read 1/2 a novel, made a roast, pulled weeds, walked the dog, watched a kid blow bubbles in the park. Still can’t listen to her voicemails, but they’re there if I need them.

Hmm. The original (bunk to begin with but whatever) and the WH version. Context matters. The original made Grant look scruffy and Lee pompous but the key players are the wingmen. Grant’s guys were ready to keep throwing down. Cropping them out and popping the highlights on Lee changes the message.

If a child, their parents, and their medical doctor are all in favor of pursuing a generally accepted medical treatment, why would lawmakers intervene to prohibit it?

Some background: Houston’s toll roads are wildly profitable, tolls can soar to $20 or more, and no cash is accepted at most tollbooths. So “toll violations” are pretty commonplace here.

The notion that “God has a side on every issue”—and the implication that a certain group of humans is empowered to say what side that is—is toxic to a free democracy in a diverse society.

Screenshot from the SCOTUS opinion in Department of Education v California linked above with text as follows:

14 DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION v. CALIFORNIA
JACKSON, J., dissenting
Courts that are properly mulling interim injunctive relief (to prevent imminent harms and thereby facilitate fair adjudication of potentially meritorious claims) should be waryof allowing defendants with weak underlying arguments to divert all attention to ancillary threshold and remedial questions. Children, pets, and magicians might find pleasure in the clever use of such shiny-object tactics. But a court of law should not be so easily distracted.
Yet, here we are. Instead of leaving the lower courtjudges alone to do the important work of efficiently adjudicating all of the parties’ legal claims, the Supreme Courthas decided to enter the fray

This is something many people don't understand about being a lawyer. I will put your interests before my own. In court, I will defend the positions you tell me to defend, even if I disagree. But I cannot and will not lie for you. Sadly, some of the people who don't understand this are lawyers.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

Mango Chamoy Sherbet + Apple Crisp is probably one of the best ideas I’ve had in the last decade.
