Alito could have announced his retirement months ago, allowing a normal confirmation process during this Congress, but that would have hurt the GOP in the midterms. Doing it after the election would be partisan in more than one way.

New GLOW special report: “Trial by Press Conference.” We document dozens of public statements by six senior DOJ officials — Bondi, Blanche, Dhillon, Martin, Patel, and Pirro — that appear to violate the rules against trying cases in the press. 🧵

I am not very worried about about the Tory Tapestry’s misuse of “doth”. What worries me much more is this sequence of panels which seems to show a small boat full of brown-skinned people followed by a plague of rats running riot and then a lot of dead white people labelled tax payers.
Detail from Conservative Party mock Bayeux Tapestry showing 1. A boat full of brown skinned people. 2. Enormous rats chasing cats. 3. White-skinned “tax payers” dead in the streets.

Since at least 2017, my impression of POTUS’s character has been: if he’s going down, he wants to bring everyone else down with him, & I’ve consciously drawn the Hitler analogy. So I both agree with Conway & am not surprised to see people with personal knowledge of the man’s character saying this.

A rich text. Robert Jenrick, who this time last year Kemi was defending and wanted to run the justice system, depicted frequently as an unperson. The multiracial crowd celebrating Kemi, the monoracial one on the boats (are Albanians, Iranians, Iraqis and Syrians black now?)

This reminds me of twenty years ago, when I kept thinking, “ I thought we were pretty much agreed that torture is bad & the US government shouldn’t do it.” You get can get used to anything, but the systematic third-state exile program is jaw-dropping in the same way if you think about it at all.

What surprises me most is that Alex Jones was part of the conspiracy to cover up the Sandy Hook hoax (DOJ staged a fake massacre, obvs). His role was to publicize the hoax allegations widely, lose the defamation cases deliberately, & go bankrupt, to deter anyone else from exposing the hoax.

Fellow Americans: Larwood was the bowler who later fractured an Australian's skull in the so-called "bodyline" tour in 1932-33. There are no Ray Chapmans from that era of Test cricket, but there are some Mickey Cochranes.

Government legal advice should not be secret. If there are facts in the memo that are classified, redact them. But it’s repugnant to democracy & rule of law that we aren’t allowed to see the government’s reasoning for why intentional killing of people on boats suspected of carrying drugs is legal.

Absolutely wild that the position of the U.S. government is explicitly “no trannies” and there’s still democrats that want to lean into the “no boys in women’s sports” phrasing about us.

If it were that easy to give a get-out-of-jail-free card to host-state nationals whom you hire to commit crimes on your behalf, a lot of states would have done it by now. There’s a reason why most people can’t remember a single instance of that happening.

Two practice points from this: 1) When you think you’ve found a bombshell, you almost always haven’t. The bigger the bombshell, the more carefully you have to check it out. 2) Practice around smart people w/ good judgment who will tell you when they see that you’re about to make an ass of yourself.

Finally. The extent to which Trump’s own judicial appointees delayed Boasberg’s proceedings on Trump’s behalf, with very little basis for intervening at all (“very little” is generous), should be a scandal. Today’s hearing won’t end the nonsense, but it’s a step closer.

The Republicans have the majority. Why can’t they find competent staffers? With the likes of Blackburn & Johnson, I don’t assume a Senator has enough brainpower to run a 40-watt bulb, but it seems they are too dumb even to hire smart people to do the research & write their scripts.

This Is the natural result of constantly saying people who do wrong (including violent wrong) have “legitimate concerns.” The state, in the hands of a Reform UK council, acts against migrants with no justification *other than* people’s “concerns.”

“What's happening here is anti-Zionist. After all, the whole promise of Israel is that any Jew can move there simply because they're Jewish. And now there's this new idea that you have to support a certain agenda, or else we don't want you." If these accounts are true, he’s absolutely right.

The article should be astonishing but sadly isn’t. None of the justifications given is based on actual harm or risk—it all refers to “perceptions” or “fears.” Even that isn’t systematic—it’s “anecdotal,” with no indication of how widely held these perceptions & fears are.

On a serious note for lawyers back home who are following the "terrorism" arrests over here, you might have noticed that the arrested men were released on "police bail." The police here can let someone leave in exchange for an enforceable promise to come back to the station on a given date.
