Lucien Lazare, Jewish fighter in the French Resistance, has died at 101. After fighting the Nazis, he was rejected by his synagogue later in life for translating an article saying “Israel, today, is nothing but a formless mass of corruption, oppression and injustice.” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/w...

He and a small troop of French Jews worked with the Allies to distribute supplies and fight the Nazis, ambushing a German train and liberating a city in the south.

One of the best takedowns of the "rationalists" and Libertarians is in Fargo, season 5: Roy: "I want freedom without arbitrary rules.” Lorraine: "So you want freedom without responsibility? Son, there's only one person on Earth who gets that deal." Roy: "The President?" Lorraine: "A baby.”

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

A very complicated Sankey diagram showing the usage of electricity in the United States. Or the left are sources of energy and on the right are consumers, so, for example, nuclear is on the left and residential is on the right. Petroleum dominates.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

People joke that Marx couldn't have written 9 to 5 but that Dolly could have written Das Capital. It's not really a joke to me because I believe it to be true: Dolly understood the pressures of class just like Marx did, but she was able to speak to the masses in a way that Marx could never.

BINGO: surveillance is a permission structure. Watch anyone or any place long enough police will find a reason to intervene, usually to harass people and neighborhoods they are already biased to find predisposed to crime.

YESSS this has been true for decades and has been decried by techies and netizens since the beginning. Algos are now so ingrained is our everyday lives that we atrophised our ability to search and discover for stuff, not to talk about developinf taste. IMHO this is also part of genAI's rise.

Google's "AI" "search" conveys opinions and gives the impression of credibility. This was already known to be dangerous in "news" outlets. Google is just blatantly arming people's biases and getting a pass bc among other things we can't handle justice for all.

I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

I've often joked, bitterly, that women's rights are very important to progressive men, just not as important as anything else. Because whether it comes to excusing a misogynist or even a rapist or dismissing the importance of reproductive rights and or being willing to trade them away for some electoral advantage, or joining campaigns of online abuse against women, or just attacking women in ways they would not attack men, I have seen progressive men do these things and other progressive men stand by.
