China at 36% is very impressive but also clashes with the idea that they're *that* acendant there. I keep forgetting that in China "new energy vehicle" also means plug-in hybrids and EREVs lol.

So what happens when everyone who kills someone fights to the death when cornered? What about false convictions? What about self defense? Society just cannot work well with no mercy or mitigating circumstances as a rule

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

There's a lot about how we got here but some of it is less relevant now, ie communism is no longer a major player, and Fukuyama devotes a lot of pages to Islamic style governance that no longer seems relevant between both the rise of the far right and the crossover between those two groups

Phizle @phizle.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes! That's one of the points of Fukayama, that a certain section of the population desire domination over all material wealth and will be a perpetual threat to any system that can't provide them with an opportunity for violence

Jose Andres is the absolute GOAT. turbolib who has brought meals to disaster zones after the Haiti earthquake & to war-stricken families in Ukraine and Gaza and now he’s YIMBYposting in the face of Spain’s severe housing shortage

Incredible to see the "experts" on resolving the housing emergency that Spain is experiencing! On every television! @telediario_tve @ANoticias
@tele5_noticias @noticias_cuatro The reality is that we have politicians who try to create decrees and solutions when they lack the preparation or knowledge to devise a real solution to the problem we're facing.
Spain doesn't have a problem of a lack of decrees. It has a problem of a lack of housing.
And as long as the Government keeps confusing announcing measures with solving problems, we'll keep paying the consequences of its inaction.
Subsidizing demand without increasing supply pressures prices. Regulating a market more and more without building new housing doesn't eliminate scarcity: it manages it. Taxing a type of rental can change incentives, but it doesn't lay a single brick either.Because housing doesn't get cheaper by distributing scarcity. It gets cheaper by ending it.
Spain needs to build. A lot.
More available land. Permits in months, not years. More density wherever possible. Legal certainty. Much more public housing and also private housing.
But the Government isn't doing what's necessary. It prefers to intervene on the few homes that exist rather than create the conditions for there to be many more. It prefers to present patches as solutions and load the cost of its failure onto owners, developers, and citizens.
The rest can serve to redistribute, protect certain groups, or change incentives. But let's not confuse that with solving the underlying problem.
You don't fix a lack of housing by better distributing the few homes that exist. You fix it by making many more exist.
Less propaganda. Less patches. Less obsession with intervening on the same apartment.
More supply. More construction. More homes.

Imagine if we simply left murders by students on college campuses to be punished by colleges, using only the internal punishments they are able to inflict. We would find it insane and intolerable. Rape isn't that far off in terms of severity. Why are we putting utterly unsuited orgs in charge?

I don't think a modified liberalism in which only people who believe in liberalism are afforded full political rights is incoherent or indefensible. I agree that it's outside the traditional liberal pedigree, but I don't really care about that.

Being really enthusiastic about new technology and our scientific and technology industries was the USA’s brand for what, the entire 20th century? And seems like over the course of about 20 years, big tech and our abject failure to meaningfully regulate it has pretty successfully lit that on fire.

The more I get into the details of the recent AI "escapes" and the calls from the big AI companies for a regulatory framework, the more it really feels like they're actively trying to create a legal cartel for the normal selfish reasons you would expect them to do that.

tbh I feel like you could do a really interesting sociological project by looking at the content of rap albums made by suburban white boys and tracking when the "dead homie song" goes from "made up dead homie" to "homie who died of an OD"
