You can use agents to produce code at a pace that a team can make sense of it; and there are some benefits to that (e.g. producing something you couldn’t have otherwise made with the talent at hand). But this artisinal use of LLMs undermines the value prop of the fully operational software factory.

The nightmare of how LLMs will be used to attack researchers. I can see this also being used to attack academics in general for not agreeing with the tech overlords.

This makes me hopeful. This number is aspirational but nowhere near out of reach: a working professional could realistically cash out their 401k and buy off a public official. Owning a senator is more attainable for most Americans than home ownership.

Among the things we absolutely need to do to get the US back on track is change how we do business so that CEOs have significantly less personal power. The Unitary Executive theory of the President and the cult of the Mad King CEO are expressions of the same social disorder.

As it becomes clear that language models—like humans—love passing notes to each other on message boards, I’m starting to think the thing we need to worry about is not the “alignment” of an isolated model but, like, the fluid dynamics of a language slurry.

This is such a good piece by Renee and Kate; and it kind of extrapolates the (always rightfully contested) gatekeeping question of media into the AI age. AI gatekeeping is already here. And more subtle and less transparent than ever. Why would we give that power to AI labs uncontested?

Send this to a young adult who looks at their phone while walking on campus.
A girl reading texts on her phone while walking through her college campus. All around her people are running because they are being attacked by squirrels. She doesn’t notice. Her friend is saying, reunion tonight! Bring snacks! O.m.g. Tiffany is freaking out for some reason. A squirrel shouts, “Fly, my brothers! To the dining hall!” The text reads: Oh no! You were on your phone and unprepared for the squirrel uprising! Put your phone away! Distracted walking sends people to the ER every year.

You can feed the image into a model and have it make a news story. In this case, the prompt was "Write a brief news story describing the protest captured in this image. It occurred earlier today"
Thousands Gather at Google Campus in Large Protest Earlier Today

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside multiple Google office buildings earlier today, filling plazas, sidewalks, and nearby streets in what appeared to be one of the largest gatherings at the campus in recent memory.

Overhead imagery shows dense crowds concentrated around two office buildings labeled "Google 1965" and "Google 1875," with protesters extending across landscaped areas and pedestrian routes connecting the buildings. Several roadways appeared to be largely occupied by foot traffic, while nearby parking lots and surrounding streets remained accessible.

The reason for the demonstration was not immediately clear from the available imagery, and organizers' demands had not been independently confirmed at the time of publication. There were no visible indications in the image of widespread property damage or clashes, though the overhead perspective alone cannot establish the nature of interactions on the ground.

Authorities had not yet released official attendance figures. Based on the visible extent of the gathering, the crowd appeared to number in the several thousands, making it a significant public demonstration at the campus.

The protest's duration, any resulting disruptions to campus operations, and whether arrests or injuries occurred were not immediately known.
