As it is the week of the Nobel prizes and also the week of the Budget here, I thought it worth flagging the pretty pathetic record of the Irish state in supporting academic research (in case you can't see, Ireland is at the bottom between Chile and Cost Rica).

This story by @tbartelme.bsky.social is a fantastic exploration of the intricate web of consequences that our changing oceans inflict on distant lands -- but the real hero is the local news team based in Charleston, SC that made this story happen.

Ireland's chronic over-dependence on HGVs for freight leaves us at mercy of every fuel crisis & cutting diesel prices is only a short-term salve. We need to shift to rail freight & electrify our HGV fleet, as I explain in @irishexaminer.bsky.social today. www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm...

Subsidies for diesel are lost money when electric trucks are the future
Pumping taxpayers' money into diesel-guzzling trucks is fair to nobody when we should be subsidising companies to transition to electric vehicles

Another very hot October day, especially across coastal central & southern California (where widespread 100s have occurred, again, even near immediate coast) but now also extending farther north into NV, ID, WY, and eastern OR. Anomalous heat continues across the West this week.
Map from coolwx.com showing locations across CONUS with record-breaking temperatures, or near-record breaking temperatures, at present. There are many such locations across the West, extending from coastal southern California to the Northern Rockies

It’s time to stop subsidising fossil fuels. Promoting continued fossil fuel reliance is reinforcing energy injustice and worsening climate injustice - this is the opposite of what is urgently needed.

New work: The Folded Earth, oil and peat (collected on a walk) on linen, 60 x 80cm
Heavily textured painting through multiple layers of paint and peat. Oranges, browns, black, greys and olive greens used to build a bogland landscape in the foreground: layers of cut-away turf exposed, and the beginnings of rewilding. Heavily outlined shapes of contours, rocks, trees and vegetation, with patches of white bogcotton. An expressive pale olive sky, with burnt umber and white clouds.
