We appear to be heading for another month with a fairly pronounced rainfall deficit. October is one of our most unsettled months so important time to replenish. If we see a dry winter there will be big problems for 2027 the wet winter saved us from greater drought issues this summer.

If you didn’t appreciate the chill this morning. Well have no fear.. warm weather will return for a time in first half of next week. Next Tuesday particularly so, 00z Euro had 22C in E/SE with overnight temps as warm as typical daytime highs. Warmth is proving very difficult to shake off.

Good morning! Certainly a fresh start to Thursday with cool polar maritime flow. Breezier northerly breeze has stopped it from getting that cold overnight, but it does make it feel cooler. Still low of 7.5C at Heathrow is coolest since mid May.

You might not like it but some welcome steady rain is falling across London area. Up to September we was just short of top 10 driest years in records from 1948 at LHR, but nearly about 1/3rd of rain we received in January.

Heathrow’s reporting 23.8C at 3pm with crystal blue skies and light winds, to me that’s idyllic summer weather, it doesn’t really get any better in October. This is a daily max record for 5th October at Heathrow I’ll need to count them all up in this crazy year. (1/2)

Another warm and unseasonably sunny day in London with barely a breath of wind☀️ Up to 23C in central these are typical summer temperatures albeit not during the summer just gone! It has been hotter though on this day in 1921, St James’s Park soared to 28.3C the following day it was 28.9C! (1/2)

I’m quite aware it’s not seasonable. The majority of people will be be with me, tarring it with climate breakdown and all that jazz is not going to change anything. October is typically a depressing month. I struggle now more with dark gloomy days personally. Temperatures is of less importance.

September 2026 was yet another exceptionally warm month in London. An average temperature of 18.7C at LHR which is +2.8C above 1991-2020 climatology only behind 2023. These temps would be v near normal in July and August but the 30-year baseline is much trailing behind the rapidly warming climate.

To add this much colder September weather compared to recent years has been beneficial to refreeze of Arctic sea ice. Following annual minimum on September 13th which was 10th or 11th lowest. Extent is currently 19th lowest in 49 year satellite record.

The high #Arctic above 80N has made a swift plunge to winter unusually early. I make current temperatures near end of September the coldest in 26 years since new millennium. I’ve included 2025 which was significantly warmer and this great “warmth” continued throughout the winter.

Correction this is what happens when you don’t check and take other people’s words the actual minimum was 19.4C at SJP. Therefore a tropical night was not seen anywhere, regardless still highly exceptional overnight temperatures for end of September.

Fairly robust agreement for a noticeable change in feel from midweek next week, introducing much cooler polar air from near Iceland. It’s not a rainy pattern at all being on periphery of Atlantic high. Very long time since we’ve had stretch of below temps but seems mid October could deliver.

I can confirm St James’s Park had an overnight low of 20.1C (68F) an extreme warm night on eve of October. This pushes back latest tropical night on record in London area by an incredible 16 days. September is a cooling month so this is staggering… (1/2)

El Niño is an absolute monster we have now surpassed the Super El Niño of 2015-2016 with peak expected in November-December 2026. We can’t truly know how significant the 1877-1878 El Niño was in equatorial Pacific clearly very significant, but this is at least strongest event in ~150 years.

The latest tropical night in London = overnight min staying above 20C occurred on 14 Sept 2016 at St James’s Park. Tuesday night is looking exceptionally warm the final night of September. We may set a new latest tropical night by over 2 weeks. Just missing October record 17.8C at SJP from 2005.

It’s been an extraordinary warm year and we’re not finished yet, it goes well beyond just the summer. At #London Heathrow, January 2026 ranked 31st warmest of the 79 Januaries (1948-present). The remaining months have all bar one been in top 5 warmest with majority either 1st warmest or 2nd. (1/2)

I’m projecting September 2026 will be 2nd warmest on record in London behind 2023. Up to recently this would have been warmer than a typical July the hottest month. Some also interesting perspective September 2026 would have been 2nd warmest month of all months in 1960s at London Heathrow. (1/2)

A renewed area of calm, mid latitude blocking is expected to develop across NW Europe heading into next weekend. Nights trending cooler but warm bright days, early October and we’re still seeing blocked summery charts. It feels like we are stuck in a loop.

Based on outlook in London only 2 days this September will have failed to reach 20C even in historically warm 2023 we had 4 days fail to reach it. 16 days in 2025 and it was a near average month. Another exceptionally warm month has crept up on us. When will it flip?
