Trump officially rolled back fuel efficiency standards today. The new target for 2031 is about 34.5 miles per gallon, down from 50.4. That means more gas burned, more pollution, and more money out of drivers’ pockets. So much for making things affordable.

The derelict stone cottage overlooked the estuary. Oil on panel, 70 x 100cm #MawddachEstuary #CadairIdris #Wales
A wintery scene from memory: the remains of a stone cottage under a blanket of snow centre foreground, surrounded by rocks and remains of a dry stone wall. A narrow view of the estuary beyond, shadowed by a mountain range beneath a dark grey sky. Moonlight highlighting a patch of white cloud and reflecting off patches of snow around the valley.

The climate crisis poses a critical defence threat. So why are MPs still being denied access to the full Joint Intelligence Committee report?
Graphic with a map-style weather image in the background and a black-and-white photo of Adrian Ramsay, MP for Waveney Valley. Headline reads: “UK WARNS EL NIÑO POSES CRITICAL DEFENCE THREAT.” A quote from Adrian Ramsay reads: “It’s good that the foreign secretary is presenting the findings of this crucial report to ministers from other governments. But it begs the question, why are MPs in this country still being denied access to the full report? And, most importantly, why has our government still not published its response to how it will address the stark findings?”

Graphite, oil and masking tape on Fabriano Artistico.
Figure of a pregnant woman turned away from the viewer. Her body is just an outline, hands folded over her stomach; the head and neck are shaded with olive green paint, emphasising the tilt of her head upwards, in defiance, with minimal facial details. There is masking tape forming a frame around her head and shoulders, painted over, to obscure the boundaries and incorporate it into the composition. Her eyes are lowered.

A new painting: Remnants of Winter at Llwyn Onn, oil on canvas, 70 x 100cm
Painting on an easel in a small studio. Description on second image. Tall painting of a mountain landscape in predominantly dark, earth colours. Folded, organically shaped hills and rocks layered on top of each other almost to the top of the canvas. A narrow strip of moody sky above. A small yellow cottage nestled in the centre of the composition, almost part of the landscape. Rough, random marks and rock shapes below.

My latest painting: Barmouth Harbour, oil on canvas, 60 x 60cm #oilpainting #Barmouth #Wales #irishart
A small harbour centre foreground, framed by land and rocks to the left and very tall, black railway bridge arches to the right. A small row of white cottages along the harbour, then a steep, rounded mountainside rising all the way up, disappearing at the top of the canvas. The ridge descends from left to right, with a deep gully cutting down to the town. A small patch of sky top right, with white cloud. Limited palette of browns, black, greens, ochres and white.

This broke my heart because it gets to the part of this moment that is hardest to confront. The danger was never just the con man. It was the hunger for what he was selling, and the willingness to sacrifice compassion, decency and other people’s humanity to get it. Read this.
You know what truly breaks my heart?
It's not that America fell for a brilliant con-man. He isn't. And they weren't fooled.
What I find devastating is how many people were absolutely desperate to believe the lies.
How many ached for permission to dress their cruelty in patriotism. How many clung to racist. Homophobic. Transphobic.
Ethnocentric stereotypes. Because they thought the lies were promising them a shortcut to power. A way to profit.
Personally and politically. From the suffering of millions of absolutely innocent people.
The tragedy isn't the con. It's the hunger for it.
The willingness to trade compassion for the cheap thrill of feeling superior. The way hate sells because too many people show up already desperate to buy. —KALEN DION

Dublin, as an ancient city, has relatively few links to the Renaissance because of the vicissitudes of history. One beautiful survival is the early 16th C Our Lady of Dublin, also known as the Black Madonna in the Whitefriar’s Church. Such artwork is exceptionally rare, for the date, in Ireland [1]

A dark, semi-abstract seascape, using just indigo and white. A dark mass of land or water fills the lower 2/3 of the composition, heavily textured through layers of paint and mark-making. There is a suggestion of steep cliffs to the left of the horizon, clouded in fog, with waves breaking onto a shore in the distance. The sky is dark and clouded.
