Thornberry as ever was trying to be clever in this interview and blur the lines between Schengen and FoM to make it all sound like it could be up for debate. Kudos to the presenters for challenging her on this. FoM would not be optional. If we're going to debate rejoining, we need to do so honestly.

It is sad how the success of HS1 (London to Channel Tunnel) has been memory-holed within British and international media

Guys, not everything suggested by the public is worth parliamentary time
Screenshot from the article: 'The MPs' hearing will be part of the committee's State of Play inquiry, where members of the public or others can request an evidence session to be held into a particular subject that interests or concerns them.'

Alas, what really matters at the end of the day
Screenshot of an article from the FT: But at last week’s meeting of ambassadors from EU member states to prepare for Carney’s visit, one remarked that the bloc was “not a ‘middle power’” and the much smaller Canada should not expect any special treatment, according to people briefed on the exchange.

“Many capitals feel that there needs to be a bit of a sense of realism,” said a fifth diplomat. He pointed to the fact that 10 countries, including France and Italy, have yet to ratify Canada’s 2017 free trade deal with the EU (Ceta), which was held up over objections from several national assemblies to provisions that would give Canadian investors more rights to sue governments and to lower tariffs for agricultural goods.

Again, what does this actually mean? About eight percent of Canada's trade is with the EU, with the United States it's over sixty percent. I'm all for diversifying but if there's one thing we've learnt from Brexit, all the hope and effort in the world doesn't change the realities of geography.

I remain bewildered by claims that AI has or will revolutionise productivity. If I use chatGPT for a work task, the process actually takes longer compared with if I did not use an AI.

ADHD seems to be the canary for a wider attack on neurodivergence. Could it be because it is more easily misunderstood than other conditions, such as dyslexia?

I understand this is a minor point, but I also do not like her prose. The sentence structures are uneven, and there is an excessive use of semi-colons in subsequent paragraphs.

As others have pointed out, this doesn't make the point @mattyglesias.bsky.social is claiming - it's almost entirely driven by the rise in the minimum wage (which has pushed up the bottom decile a *lot*.). Across the rest of the distribution, much less change (eg 90-50 ratio has hardly changed)

There are those who want a united Europe because they’re internationalists and want a more united world. There are those who want a united Europe because they want a white ethnostate. Pro-Europeans, not just in Britain but across Europe, should oppose the 2nd vision and fight against it.

Disagree only in the sense that the real watershed was the 2008 crisis which the UK has never really structurally recovered from. Brexit in that sense was just a symptom of a deeper malaise. Cameron’s relatively long premiership which was only maintained through coalition now looks the exception.

That thread is absolutely batshit. 1984 is both a complex book and ... it's not that complicated to understand what it is talking about if you know anything about European history in the 1930s/40s. I mean, you could also consider POUM but you don't even really need to know about that!

Banning under-16s from social media will lead to a whole world of unintended consequences. Speaking from my own experience: taking pictures of buses is not a 'cool' activity, especially as a youngster. You're even less likely to find somebody in your immediate peer group who shares those interests.

Possession of pepper spray without lawful authority is an offence under the Firearms Act 1968, section 5. Use of pepper spray on someone would probably result in a prosecution for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

I think there’s truth in this, and it seems likely that the combination of years of painful inflation with a loss of access to this kind of work has contributed to the rise of a relentless grifter/scam economy targeting young people (which emphasises the futility of 9-5 work in its advertising).

This is really a story about delays in the County Court. One factor which the government does not acknowledge in its response: delays caused by litigants in person. Simple mistakes by a landlord can result in delays to eviction and a wasted hearing.

One of the frustrations with a lot of this discourse is that it is actually a court funding issue more than anything else. For example: I was instructed in a possession case yesterday which was issued in October. It shouldn’t take 6 months to reach a first hearing.

A recurring pattern in UK politics. Labour in opposition: Parliament must scrutinise treaties and trade agreements properly. Labour in government: the current system works fine. Today's House of Lords debate (16 March) on treaty scrutiny will highlight the problem.
