Guys, not everything suggested by the public is worth parliamentary time
Screenshot from the article: 'The MPs' hearing will be part of the committee's State of Play inquiry, where members of the public or others can request an evidence session to be held into a particular subject that interests or concerns them.'

Alas, what really matters at the end of the day
Screenshot of an article from the FT: But at last week’s meeting of ambassadors from EU member states to prepare for Carney’s visit, one remarked that the bloc was “not a ‘middle power’” and the much smaller Canada should not expect any special treatment, according to people briefed on the exchange.

“Many capitals feel that there needs to be a bit of a sense of realism,” said a fifth diplomat. He pointed to the fact that 10 countries, including France and Italy, have yet to ratify Canada’s 2017 free trade deal with the EU (Ceta), which was held up over objections from several national assemblies to provisions that would give Canadian investors more rights to sue governments and to lower tariffs for agricultural goods.

For context: HMYOI Wetherby holds inmates aged between 15 and 18 years old, and the latest data for England & Wales (2024-25) shows that a monthly average of 418 people are in youth custody across the entire jurisdiction.

The Bar Council is not pulling any punches regarding proposed changes to the use of juries for criminal trials
Bar Council Chair Barbara Mills KC said: “The criminal justice system is not in this crisis because of jury trials. Removing the right to jury trial and introducing a new intermediate court has not been piloted or thoroughly modelled with there being little evidence that it will significantly reduce the Crown Court backlog. This is a time-consuming measure that requires legislative change and hinges on increasing court resources that could be better diverted to the existing estate.

“The focus should be on fixing the swathe of inefficiencies plaguing the system, which could be resolved and make a real difference now. The government should first test whether efficiency reforms would make a difference before making any major constitutional change.

“At the very least, the proposed intermediate court should be modelled and piloted before doing away with a longstanding tradition, which may result in a further lack of trust and confidence in our criminal justice system.”

Can anyone explain how this is a coherent ideology? Can Glasman explain ‘primacy of Parliament’ without referring to A V Dicey?
Maurice Glasman, the Labour peer and Blue Labour founder, told an event at Policy Exchange that the Conservative party had been destroyed and "the same fate will befall this government unless it moves into the space the Conservatives vacated".
"Reform is a working-class insurrection against the progressive ruling class, and the only way to counter it is for the Labour government to lead the insurrection, to celebrate the collapse of the era of globalisation, to embrace the space of Brexit, the renewal of the Commonwealth, the restoration of vocation, the primacy of parliament, the integrity of our peace, the effectiveness of our armed forces, the protection of our borders."

Yeah, I am not feeling particularly confident about this challenge. It’s effectively asking Strasbourg to overrule the English courts when it comes to allowing third party interventions in administrative cases.

I feared this would be the response. I am concerned that the court will reject this application because of standing rules in judicial review. I think it would be better if the money and support when to a challenge brought by Stonewall or a trans applicant.

On a bad day, this kind of commentary does not help. Explanatory Notes aren’t legal authority—they reflect the government of the day’s interpretation of the legislation. Courts don’t use them when interpreting statute, they rarely even cite Hansard.

Because I think this will be helpful, here is the relevant provision from Article 7, Directive 2012/34/EU as amended. You can read the entire directive using this link: eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-conten...
