Thornberry as ever was trying to be clever in this interview and blur the lines between Schengen and FoM to make it all sound like it could be up for debate. Kudos to the presenters for challenging her on this. FoM would not be optional. If we're going to debate rejoining, we need to do so honestly.

It is sad how the success of HS1 (London to Channel Tunnel) has been memory-holed within British and international media

Canada is ahead when it comes to being the only non-EU country participating in SAFE

Interesting read. It is very early days, the focus on natural resources and AI regulations make the most sense. Canada is already in parts of Erasmus and Horizon, so those are the programmes that could be easily upgraded. That would put Canada in a similar position to the UK.

Guys, not everything suggested by the public is worth parliamentary time
Screenshot from the article: 'The MPs' hearing will be part of the committee's State of Play inquiry, where members of the public or others can request an evidence session to be held into a particular subject that interests or concerns them.'

Alas, what really matters at the end of the day
Screenshot of an article from the FT: But at last week’s meeting of ambassadors from EU member states to prepare for Carney’s visit, one remarked that the bloc was “not a ‘middle power’” and the much smaller Canada should not expect any special treatment, according to people briefed on the exchange.

“Many capitals feel that there needs to be a bit of a sense of realism,” said a fifth diplomat. He pointed to the fact that 10 countries, including France and Italy, have yet to ratify Canada’s 2017 free trade deal with the EU (Ceta), which was held up over objections from several national assemblies to provisions that would give Canadian investors more rights to sue governments and to lower tariffs for agricultural goods.

Again, what does this actually mean? About eight percent of Canada's trade is with the EU, with the United States it's over sixty percent. I'm all for diversifying but if there's one thing we've learnt from Brexit, all the hope and effort in the world doesn't change the realities of geography.

When I initially heard some the facts around one of the deaths, I did think it sounded closer to gross negligence manslaughter. A big issue for me remains the quality of evidence that was allowed to be presented to juries.

I remain bewildered by claims that AI has or will revolutionise productivity. If I use chatGPT for a work task, the process actually takes longer compared with if I did not use an AI.

I don’t know why the Crown Office has made this particular decision, but anti-terrorism laws in the UK do have a broad definition of terrorism that includes serious damage to property

Ideally, should encourage prosecutors to reflect more carefully on charging decisions. It is a question for a jury to decide, and prosecutors could always press lesser charges in these sort of cases. That said, sentencing guidelines are a weak point.

I would not worry, it is an obscure area of criminal law procedure. I think what is relevant are the M'Naghten rules, as they deal with defendants who were unwell at the time of the alleged offence.

Though I think (not 100% sure) a trial of the facts is limited to situations in which the defendant is unable to stand trial, for example on mental health grounds

I understand this is a minor point, but I also do not like her prose. The sentence structures are uneven, and there is an excessive use of semi-colons in subsequent paragraphs.

I avoid reading anything she has written. I don't understand her philosophical 'beliefs', nor how someone can be in academia and holds such views. What annoys me now is that politicians have sided with her views.

The High Court did, but then the government was successful in appealing the High Court decision to the Court of Appeal. Huda Ammori (one of Palestine Actions' founders) is currently trying to appeal to the Supreme Court.

As others have pointed out, this doesn't make the point @mattyglesias.bsky.social is claiming - it's almost entirely driven by the rise in the minimum wage (which has pushed up the bottom decile a *lot*.). Across the rest of the distribution, much less change (eg 90-50 ratio has hardly changed)

There are those who want a united Europe because they’re internationalists and want a more united world. There are those who want a united Europe because they want a white ethnostate. Pro-Europeans, not just in Britain but across Europe, should oppose the 2nd vision and fight against it.
