I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier

I went to the Science Museum yesterday and as well as having a ball with my nearly four year old in their amazing child spaces (god love free London museums) I was utterly charmed by this caption.
A caption from an exhibition in the Science Museum in London about a model of an Apollo 11 lunar module built by a 12 year old boy, which reveals at the very end that the creator of the model now works as Curator of the Museum’s Space Technology Collection.

About 8% of trans Americans have already changed states because of bigotry. That’s 130k-260k people. If each of those brought just ONE family member on average, that’s 260k-520k people. These are Oregon Trail numbers (about 400k went to OR/CA/UT on the trail). Will we get a video game and monuments?

How did the America-native turkey become the Official Food Of Renaissance Fairs And Other Ye Olde Places(tm)? Turns out once the Spanish imported them, Europeans went wild for tasty turkeys. By 1629, the Puritans even brought turkeys with them back to America, a huge waste of valuable boat space. 🧪

Daily Walrus Fact 🧪 : Sometimes walruses roam away from home. This walrus, Wally, got on boats. The new boats were overwhelmed by the sudden walrus mass on top of them, and the boats sank. He then moved on to different boats and sank them too. This is not a metaphor, why would you think that?

Walrus fact of the day 🧪 : Walruses spend a lot of time in cold water and on the beach, so they need a strong temperature regulation system! They change their blood circulation on land, which is why Mr. Dozer here is pinkish. When they get back in the water they turn grey as they redirect blood.

Walruses gather in huge many-thousand walrus “haulouts.” They commute to the feeding grounds. As ice disappears, they’re using beaches more and more often. This causes crowding and longer commutes, leading to additional stress. Filmmakers spent a fascinating season with a scientist, article here: 🧪

people are real quick to call transphobic policies that lose in court a “waste of money” and “obviously wildly illegal” but won’t you please think of the politicians? how will they achieve new frontiers in discrimination if they spend time thinking about pedestrian concerns like “the constitution”?

But not the original function of the tusks! Walruses evolved on ice-free temperate coastlines and likely initially arose as weaponry associated with sexual selection/competition, much like deer antlers - later co-opted for benthic feeding and ice 'walking'!

Walrus tusks are their upper canine teeth. Their genus name, Odobenus, means “tooth walker,” and one of the big uses of the tusks is to haul themselves up on ice floes. Basically their tusks are giant built in ice picks. They also sometimes use them as a kickstand for sleeping 😂 🧪

I’m also going to do a week of walrus facts, because walruses deserve it. Someone wanted to know if walruses have a prodigious appetite for oysters, like in the Lewis Carroll poem. Most of a walrus’s diet is bivalves, the family of clams and oysters. So… yes! They suck the meat right out. 🧪
