the thing about farming is that it IS the largest *export* sector, which matters because we import a hell of a lot of stuff. However...that doesn't mean it has to be the largest in perpetuity, nor that we can't reduce imports (a lot of which are, surprise surprise, fossil fuels)

It's bad that normies have started using "minimum viable" as a "good thing". It is, if you can test it and patch it infinity times at zero cost. It is not, if it's a gigantic capital outlay that you cannot fundamentally modify for a generation.

This is an important idea! I grew up in an academic family and had a bizarrely detailed understanding of grant processes (on my dad’s side) and IRB/conflict of interest (on my mom’s side) that it never occurred to me that grad students generally wouldn’t know any of this…

A great way to do this for non-compliant managers is to type up your notes from face-to-face encounters and email them to the person to ask if you missed anything in the discussion. I once made a senior DoD manager go apoplectic using this tactic.

This is Jerry Lawson. He invented the video game cartridge for the Fairchild Channel F system. Because of his invention, many consoles had cartridges and CD formats and would become the norm. The Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, and many consoles wouldn't exist without him. Happy Black History Month.

Digging through the Cabinet papers in more detail and also noticed this about funding for the new advanced technology PRO. Cool cool cool cool cool. There's so much money floating around the existing science system to set up a totally new entity. Nobody's gonna lose their job for this, I'm sure.

Paragraph from science reform cabinet papers saying "The advanced technology focused public research organisation and platform will be funded by reprioritisation within the SI&T appropriations."

No Google, Discord has no "archive channel" option as described, why would you debase your core product in such an absurdly overt way

A screenshot of Google's AI hallucinating steps to archive Discord channels (which can't be archived in the way described, only deleted.) It reads:

AI Overview
Learn more
Yes, you can archive Discord channels to help organize your channels and visualize which ones are active and which are inactive:
Action
1 Open a channel
2 Click the three dots icon in the top-right corner
3 Click Archive channel
4 Click Archive to confirm

Producing useless bullshit more quickly is not an improvement in educational outcomes. Why would doing things in "a fraction of the time" is usually takes be a good thing? Why do we so disrespect the labor of teaching and learning as to wish it away by outsourcing it to something that cannot think?
