I've pushed the government to end unaffordable rents every day I’ve been an MP, and before then. It's a national scandal that thousands of ordinary people are forced to limit themselves & their life chances just to keep up with sky-high rents. This would be a much-needed reset👇

On this Peter Oborne column in @bylinetimes.bsky.social September issue, I can certainly 100% agree. The World Tonight and the Midnight news cut by BBC News does feel like a bereavement. Comments on Rajan, and Mishal Hussain - yes, quite right. BBC, beloved, but heading in the wrong direction.

People REALLY don’t like being told they’re wrong. What the far right have done is weaponise this and tell people that the feelings of bigotry that they’re secretly ashamed of are actually good. And if deployed cunningly this works on far more people than you'd think, which is exhausting.

This is not a "Community Safety Event" This is a gathering of racist haters at an asylum seeker hotel, and no amount of flagged-up AI slop can conceal that truth.
Screenshot of AI flyer for an anti-asylum protest at the old Ramada Hotel in Penns Lane, Sutton Coldfield

COMMUNITY SAFETY EVENT
Fridays 5-7pm
Ramada, Sutton Coldfield, B76 1LH

[AI image of a crowd of smiling white people whose faces are repeated because none of them are real. There are many flags from UK nations and some random arms holding them. There are a few token non-white people in the middle, who would be harassed as immigrants if they were actually real and there]

Let’s be clear. Labour’s line on immigration is that immigrants are a bad thing, to be tolerated in the minimum number necessary for the NHS, the economy and so forth, but basically and essentially bad. There’s no other logical reason possible for Mahmood’s approach, endorsed by Burnham.
