“Illegally detaining and brutalizing a racial minority until they agree to flee the country” isn’t immigration enforcement, it’s ethnic cleansing. There’s no legal standard here - these people meet the standard! What differentiates them is not their legal status but their race and color.

This is spot on. Republicans seldom get hit with the same sort of fecklessness rap that so often dogs Democrats because Republicans hate Democrats to their core—and it shows.

"It's so the postseason doesn't take forever!" I don't live near a team that makes the postseason, I just want to be able to watch their games in the regular season at the appropriate time for baseball

Hey, while we're here, can I complain about the season ending like half a week earlier than usual? Am I the only person here who actually likes late September baseball games? I shouldn't have to look up on like 9/25 & see there are only two more games left Also stop making Opening Day so early!

Come on, people, be an adult! Be responsible! It's OK to have standards! And don't let other people you hate make you compromise what you believe in b/c "this person isn't as bad as you're saying" (while still being pretty bad a lot of the time!) (See: Platner, Piker, a bunch of other people)

One way this plays out is people being negatively polarized into defending someone who's a dubious/bad actor b/c opponents' criticism of them is "unfair," "over the top," or when people ask "why are we talking about this when your side's example is worse" All of this should be strenuously avoided!

The main lesson of the last 25 years of the GOP holding power is that they are totally incompetent at governing & everything breaks & many people die as a result (Katrina, wars, Covid, ICE, etc). Ask yourself if that ever appears as the central frame in media coverage of politics & the two parties.

On the other hand, the Scrubs reboot is surprisingly decent for how hard the show crash-landed at the end last time. I'm enjoying the new episodes a fair amount. Like, not as good as the original but a gazillion times better than season 9 & on par with seasons 7-8 (I think OG show tailed off mid-S6)

People are constantly getting the implicit message that they're not part of a larger community or public in any way that matters & it can't be good for the social fabric of an ostensible democracy. People need to feel like their concerns can be heard, that they are part of something larger than them

Could be irrelevant & a crank opinion, but I really believe the trend of commercials no longer explaining who celebrities are is part of a larger trend of social atomization that's also part of this on a large scale "doesn't matter if you know who they are" "doesn't matter if I hear your opinion"

Yeah, I've been thinking about this for years. What the "did Biden's deliverism work?" debate misses is what could have been if Biden hadn't been too old + out of touch w/ new media to actually trying marketing anything "I'll hide away for two years b/c people might say I'm old" didn't help him!

I agree this is a problem, but the solution is kinda crass and straightforward— you have to market stuff to the American public, relentlessly. You get to mold more and lead them more than just asking them. It’s a combo of seduction and direction. Zohran is great at it.

the worst thing you can do is to base your values on what you think the public wants, the second-worst thing you can do is convince yourself that the public really shares your values and is being betrayed. People are simply not consistent enough or knowledgeable enough en masse to say this.
