Powerful and important letter about artificial so-called intelligence from Sheila Hayman from Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, in the FT today
Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies.
The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop.
Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning.
In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds.
So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!).
Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs.
The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia.
It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet.

Not 1, not 2, but 3 purple emperors on the same branch at Foxley Wood this morning. Not surprising as they were all congregating to feed on tree sap, battling with hornets, flies and the odd red admiral. Many thanks to the kind observers who pointed out where to see them.

Today in 1998, “Atomic Audit”—the first and only comprehensive, cumulative accounting of the full costs of US nuclear weapons and weapons-related programs—was published. We conservatively estimated total spending at nearly $5.5 trillion (1996 dollars). It now exceeds $12.1 trillion (2026 dollars).
The front cover of the 1998 book, "Atomic Audit: The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940," showing a yellow radiation symbol with a gray trefoil under the title and over a black and white photograph of Poseidon C3 submarine-launched ballistic missile erupting from the ocean after being test launched from the ballistic missile submarine USS Daniel Boone on September 21, 1970.The back cover of the 1998 book, "Atomic Audit: The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940," showing quotes of praise:

"Atomic Audit presents an unprecedented complete and authoritative review of the history and high cost of the entire U.S. nuclear weapons program. Included is a provocative extraordinarily large estimate of casualties from nuclear fallout and a welcome analysis of the adverse consequences of unwarranted nuclear secrecy."

— Glenn T. Seaborg, Co-discoverer of plutonium, Nobel Prize winner, and former chairman, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission

" Atomic Audit lays bare the staggering price of exacted upon the most technologically proficient of the Cold War antagonists. More important, it begins to expose the policy, planning, and operational flaws that undercut both the logic and implementation of deterrence as perceived by its American practitioners."

— General Lee Butler, retired former (last) commander of Strategic Air Command and the first commander of its successor, U.S. Strategic Command.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.
