Trump is pivoting hard toward Russia in the run-up to the midterms, urging the removal of a democratically elected head of state in Ukraine while helping the dictator who launched an unprovoked invasion.

We're two years into Trump 2.0 and virtually every instrument at the disposal of the United States has been repurposed against human rights, democracy, and international law. The "Arsenal Freedom" is now the (depleted) "Arsenal of Fascism."

Trump is openly siding with Putin, blaming Ukraine's self-defense rather than Russia's aggression for the war, and telling Ukraine to surrender. Worth calling it out every time. But hardly new. Ambushing Zelensky in DC, aping Russian propaganda, and insisting it's Ukraine's fault was March 2025.

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

“Illegally detaining and brutalizing a racial minority until they agree to flee the country” isn’t immigration enforcement, it’s ethnic cleansing. There’s no legal standard here - these people meet the standard! What differentiates them is not their legal status but their race and color.

Reactionary centrists treat “Abolish ICE“ as a metaphysical question of whether immigration enforcement is ever justified. But it is really a practical question—how can you allow a fifth column paramilitary that wants to overthrow democracy to continue to exist in your government?

Hegseth got the job not because of his clown antics on Fox News but because during the first term he made it his personal crusade to get Trump to pardon war criminals who had murdered civilians and desecrated corpses. That’s who he is and it’s what Trump hired him to be.

International humanitarian law posits that no person may be punished for acts that he or she did not commit. It ensures that the collective punishment of a group of persons for a crime committed by an individual is also forbidden, whether in the case of prisoners of war or of any other individuals (GCIII Art. 87, API Art. 75.2.d, APII Art. 4.2.b).
This is one of the fundamental guarantees established by the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their 1977 Additional Protocols. This guarantee is applicable not only to protected persons but to all
individuals, no matter what their status or to what category of persons they belong, as defined by the Geneva Conventions (GIV
Art. 33).

ICE is already setting record arrests, fueled by a growing push towards arresting people with no criminal records and people who are technically out of status but are checking in with the government and waiting for a bureaucrat to decide their applications. Now they want to ramp up arrests by 50%.

ICE appears to be using the parking lot of the Roxbury warehouse for processing and brief detention, and at least once appears to have taken people inside. But also, read this inside look from a federal contractor about how everyone knew the warehouse plan was insane but Miller demanded inhumanity.
NPR spoke to an official at a government contractor whose company was approached to convert several of the warehouses into ICE facilities. He spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation from the government.

"No one that we spoke to at DHS was for this idea whatsoever. The deputy director told us point-blank that they had pushed back very hard on it. Everybody knew warehouses are horrible places to put people," he says.

At a meeting with a deputy director at DHS, he says, his company proposed an alternative: FEMA-style camps in Texas that would be more humane.

He says that idea was swiftly shot down. While White House adviser Stephen Miller was not at the meeting, they were told that this was not what Miller wanted.

The contractor says his understanding from that meeting was that "Miller did not want the facilities that were comfortable. He did not want facilities that were humane. We were told point-blank that that was not what the administration wanted."

"Steve Miller certainly seemed to make that point to everyone that he wanted it to be cruel. This was what Miller had stated to the DHS at that time, to the DHS director and deputy director. What surprised me was just how adamant the people were that it was going to happen. Damn the consequences. I would say in 25 years of working with the U.S. government, I've never been in that position before."
