I skipped high school to buy tickets for The Phantom Menace. The following day my Dad asked ," how was school?" I replied, " It was fine " He then threw this newspaper at me and asked , " how the fuck would you know?" He was so pleased with himself that I didn't actually get in trouble.

Thanks to everyone who's donated. Those of us lucky enough to have grown up and to live by the sea - and so see how rough and cold it gets in the autumn and winter - realise again and again just how brave these folk must be to go out and do what they do.

On this day in 1981, Richard Cobb got an honorary degree from the University of Essex. That may not seem significant to you, but it makes this afternoon the 45th anniversary of one of the finest graduation addresses ever delivered 🧵
A grey slate plaque with white lettering reads: Historian Richard Cobb got an honorary degree here on a sweltering day in 1981. His speech, in full: “Well, it’s very hot and the pubs are open.”

Haaland discourse abounds. Haaland is the best player in the world who, if at his peak, you cloned, and made him and his clone play in the same team, you would make the team markedly worse.

Senegal are a really good side and were a really good side in the first half, making the manner in which France have completely and utterly broken their spirit through the sheer force of their quality and personality a truly frightening prospect for the rest of this tournament. Les Bleus’ to win.

Terry Pratchett absolutely nailed this in Maskerade and Going Postal.
"Definitely that kind of owner, he thought. Self-made man proud of his handiwork. Confuses bluffness and honesty with merely being rude. I wouldn't mind betting a dollar that he thinks he can tell a man's character by testing the firmness of his handshake and looking deeply into his eyes."It was the face, that was what it was. He had an honest face. And he loved those people who looked him firmly in the eye to see his inner self, because he had a whole set of inner selves, one for every occasion. As for firm handshakes, practice had given him one to which you could moor boats. It was people skills, that's what it was. Special people skills. Before you could sell glass as diamonds you had to make people really want to see diamonds. That was the trick, the trick of all tricks. You changed the way people saw the world. You let them see it the way they wanted it to be.
