See, that's my problem. The "request" in that sentence sounds too bossy even for me. And as a German I'm generallyallergic to unnecessary filler words, aka softeners. 😉

"Ask" is probably the best alternative, but it also sounds strange often.

I'd like to say "I'd have one request", because it doesn't require me to completely switch the sentence structure from how I would say it in German. But unfortunately it sounds off.

Is just me or does the English word request sound too aggressiv ? Plea or appeal aren't good alternatives either.

The sheer figure of 20% blows my mind. Experts are probably well aware of that. That seems to be a little higher than the chances for russian soldiers to die within one year on the front. And we talk about scaring them away by depriving them of money or putting them in camps. And people think it's

early-career academics, if you don't have a website, make yourself one. yes it's annoying but just do it it can be plain text on a white background, or google sites, or even a free Wix one with ads. nobody cares we just need to be able to look you up, quickly, bc there's like 100 other apps here

SocArXiv now has a limit of two papers per week. If authors submit more than that we assume they are LLM-generated and reject them all. Normal humans who need to upload a batch of papers, which sometimes happens, must make arrangements. Also today, ArXiv set a two papers per month limit.

After a record number of applications to the most recent Call for proposals, we have given a boost of over €210 million to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Now more than 700 additional researchers will be able to build their career in Europe.
Text on a blue background reads, ‘€210 million boost for 700+ researchers.’ Abstract lavender molecular shapes appear at the top and bottom of the image. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions logo is above the text, and the EC logo is in the top-right corner.

My priors about chimp anti-sociality confirmed: They stole from "friends" 61% of trials, from non-friends 70% of trials. Continues to be one of the biggest puzzles about human evolution, which mechanisms and evolutionary history make humans qualitatively more cooperative than other apes.

Social science should be more open with the fact that novelty is smaller and smaller and more constructed. In like 1950, you could be like "we don't know how congressional committees work here is my book on congressional committees". Not the case now.
