I really miss the old econ job market calendar with interviews in January. It was predictable, gave more time for students to be “done”, and mostly avoided students having to make hard decisions about very early job offers.

As of 2026-09-27, the # of total jobs listed on JOE is up 5.5% from this point last year. However, last year was a tough one, so for other comparisons this year's job listings are down 27.4% from 2024, and down 32.9% from 2023. 2/9

I'm convinced most professors at fancy schools would last about 3 minutes at a regular public university. It's just a completely different type of student that requires a completely different approach inside and outside the classroom. Yet everything I read about teaching is by the fancy people.

Tennessee’s voucher program is what happens when people get in a room and ask what’s the worst possible way they could design a program. Hey, what if we don’t have an income limit? Hey, what if we make the amount where poor people who get it still can’t afford private school?

A lot of universities will be facing big deficits and looking to cure what ails them. I just want them to be thoughtful about it.
Screenshot of article which reads: At the same time, new job-focused majors may not be sustainable — and can even backfire. Dominique Baker, an associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware, pointed to the rise in computer-science degrees in the 2010s. At the time, they seemed like the best way to secure a high-paying salary after graduation, she said. But with the rise of generative artificial intelligence, computer-science jobs are increasingly hard to find, and enrollment in such programs is falling significantly.
“When you tie the viability, the financial viability in particular, of an institution really tightly to jobs creation on that scale,” especially as a four-year institution, she said, “you have to be really careful, because you can find that in 10 years that program that you poured all your money into — worthless.”

Great review of recent evidence on the role of standardized testing in college admissions. A recent paper by BU econ PhD student Ethan Lewis shows that adopting test optional admissions reduces STEM degree completions, particularly for under-represented minority students. Details in thread below.

The 2025 American Community Survey should have come out today. But it has been delayed because of unusual political encroachment at Census. ACS drives business and policy decisions, especially in local communities, and is the primary input to Census’s immigration estimates.

It appears the IES Restricted Use Data License program is continuing. But the annual cost is now $3500--nearly 9X costlier than the $400 I paid before. I've been operating under the assumption the whole program would end, and have adjusted my research around that. This just solidifies my decision.
We are writing to ask whether you wish to continue your use of your IES Restricted Use Data License.

IF YES, the virtual workspace materials associated with your Restricted Use Data License will be made available to you in the coming weeks once the enclave has been established and payment has been received. This fee is $2000 for six months’ access to the enclave or $3500 for a year of access to the enclave. Note, no payments are due at this time and will only become due once your workspace is restored in the new enclave.

IF NO, your virtual workspaces will be wiped and IES will close your RUD License. Please note that following termination of the License, no materials may be recovered, nor shall any further Disclosure Risk Review occur for this License.

To continue your use in the new virtual data enclave, you MUST RESPOND BY OCTOBER 15, 2026. At that time, IES will wipe existing virtual workspaces and terminate Restricted Use Data Licenses not confirmed for continuing use.

Thank you,

IES Data Security

The most AI-exposed new college grads have initial employment declines of 5pp and earnings declines of 13%, partially driven by shifts to lower-paying sectors.
How are new college graduates affected by the rise of artificial intelligence, and what can this tell us about the mechanisms behind AI's overall labor market effects? We use administrative records on college graduates to observe how economic outcomes among college majors with differing levels of labor market AI exposure have evolved since large language models became available. We find that post-graduation employment, earnings, and job switching patterns among the most AI-exposed college majors began to diverge immediately following the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022. In regression-adjusted estimates, the most AI-exposed decile of college majors saw their likelihood of initial employment decline by five percentage points, while full-quarter initial earnings declined by thirteen percent. This earnings decline is comparable in magnitude to the earnings losses associated with graduating into a large recession. Roughly half of the decline in earnings is attributable to lower earnings within the industry sectors that employ these graduates, with the remainder resulting from a shift in the industry mix into lower-wage sectors such as restaurants and retail. The effects attenuate as graduates move further from labor market entry but remain substantial for the most exposed majors. Figure 3: Share employed one-quarter post-graduation
Notes: Employment share calculated as the fraction of graduates with non-zero earnings for the quarter. Estimates from a regression with institution-major, institution-quarter, and major-quarter of year fixed effects. Standard errors are clustered by college major. Error bars denote 95% confidence intervals. Quarter denotes observation period. November 2022, corresponding to the release of ChatGPT-3.5, marked with a red line. The gray shaded region identifies cohorts who graduated after the release of ChatGPT-3.5. Number of observations: 5,685,000. All results were approved for release by the U.S. Census Bureau, authorization number CBDRB-FY26-CES011-011.
