The Doctor and Old Fox had driven over to see the Stoat of Cliff Cottage. Once a fortnight, Old Fox brought him a basket of supplies from the village shop, things he couldn't get from the nearby farm – coffee, cocoa, biscuits, sugar, flour, toffees, paraffin oil, ink, blotting paper.

Some buildings hold their shadows after sunset. They stretch and pace beyond the failing sun. Stalk corridors, assemble in former ballrooms in hope of a grand waltz. Creep wooden doors and walls overdressed for the dark. Shadows that are so eager to meet you. – #DAKilroy, 1982

Hermes was a bad god, a shifty fellow, a liar, a thief, a teller of the future (with dice, of course), a musician, herald and messenger of the gods… —Norman MacCaig, “Hermes-Mercury” in THE POEMS OF NORMAN MACCAIG (Birlinn, 2009) #poem #poetry birlinn.co.uk/product/the-...
Norman MacCaig
Hermes-Mercury

Hermes was a bad god, a shifty fellow,
a liar, a thief, a teller of the future
(with dice, of course), a musician,
herald and messenger of the gods.

No wonder mercury was called after Mercury.
No wonder the Romans gave him that name:
the Trader, the Business Man.

How he must have laughed when the Romans
raised a statue to him
– god of commerce, god of profit and loss –
in the Street called Sober Street
where no shops were allowed, no pubs.

No wonder he was the conveyor of dreams.
Garden of Bliss, Vision of Hell – what did he care?
Yet I admire him. He was a survivor.

What a god, to survive among
those other gods and goddesses, those arrogant,
selfish, high-living turncoats and lechers –
too stupid to notice they were only
the blind dupes of Fate.

. . . Fate must have loved him, the black sheep,
the con man, the wide boy of Olympus.

Alright, time to post the receipts of this gown I've been ranting about. This is my Brunswick, 100% handsewn in silk. I love her and I love sewing, and generative AI could NEVER. Make art, friends. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to be you, with your hands. Just make it.
A woman stands in a field at sunset with small mountains in the distance. Her back is to the camera. She wears a blue and white silk gingham gown. It is an 18th century gown called a Brunswick. It consists of a petticoat (skirt) that brushes the tops of her feet, and an overgown with skirts that fall to her hip, a loose, pleated back, long sleeves, and a hood. A high white collar is visible above the hood, and a white linen cap with a dark blue ribbon around it covers her hair.

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

Night. The House of Chimes - a tower which you might immediately think of as Big Ben - is adrift in the River Thames. It still seems to be keeping time. In the background, a large, alien building looms over the city of London.
