Direct Air Capture (DAC) is often argued as a small footprint form of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) & this is seen as an advantage. For Nuremberg (Germany) to take up its current per capita emissions using DAC, would require city walls 68m high, nearly as high as the church towers (75m). 1/

Climate Policies and Electricity Prices: Why Abate When You Can Generate?
(Forthcoming Article) - Climate policies often increase electricity prices by more than they increase prices of fossil fuels. Using administrative data on German manufacturing plants from 2009 to 2017, we provide evidence that these price changes induce plants to generate electricity onsite using fossil fuels. Not all manufacturing plants are subject to emissions pricing under the EU’s Emissions Trading System, and we find evidence of emissions leakage: Electricity generation shifts from regulated power plants to unregulated manufacturing plants.

📢 Our paper "Regulated Correlations: Climate Policy & Investment Risks", joint work w. Menglu Neupert-Zhuang, was published in Energy Economics! Investing means making decisions under uncertainty. Risk-averse investors care not only about expected returns, but also covariance with other risks. 1/6
Investments in energy technologies are substantially governed by climate policy. We demonstrate analytically that price-based instruments, such as carbon-taxes, and quantity-based regulations, like emission trading, have distinct effects on the (co-) variance of power plant profits. If investors are risk-averse, this leads to divergent technology portfolios, breaking the equivalence of price- and quantity-based policy instruments under risk-neutrality. Using a calibrated stochastic electricity market model, risk aversion leads to lower baseline emissions, causing emissions trading to reduce less emissions than a carbon tax equivalent under risk neutrality. However, the welfare costs of carbon taxes rise with increasing risk aversion. Uncertainty about the stringency of carbon taxes leads to lower shares of fossil fuel assets with increasing risk aversion
