I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

🌍 A super El Niño is becoming a global stress test — from fisheries and food security to wildfire risk and coral reefs. Three recent Nature pieces trace the same story: impacts are accelerating, preparedness matters, and ecosystems need every bit of resilience we can build. #ElNino #ClimateChange 🌐🧪

This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊
Line graph time series of daily global mean sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. This year is currently at record high for this time of year. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1, and the graphic is created by Climate Central at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings.

To me it is clear we have entered the Anthropocene and humans are having a dramatic impact on the climate and environment. It is still unclear to me why the 2024 vote for defining the geological period of the Anthropocene was rejected.

Are we in the Anthropocene Epoch? Scientists can't decide
While the Anthropocene is a term most of us are well aware of, it is not an official geological epoch. Now a group of scientists has reignited the push to get it formally recognised.

23,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules. That’s the amount of heat the oceans absorbed in 2025. A number so huge it’s almost meaningless…until you realise it’s roughly 40× humanity’s annual energy use. The ocean is buying us time. We’re running out of it. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Energy nerd Christmas was yesterday, with the release of the Australia's official energy data for 2024–25. I think the share of Australia's gas being sent offshore hit a new all-time record high for the year, which is neat unless you are running an Aussie business or home that uses energy.
Australian gas production and use in the 2024–25 financial year
As with every other year in the past decade, Australia produced far more gas than it used in 2024-25.

76.5% of all the gas produced in Australia shipped overseas via one of Australia's 10 liquefied gas terminals. Another 8.3% of all the gas produced in Australia was burned by those gas export terminals and their supporting infrastructure to produce, process and compress that gas for export.

Well under one-fifth of the gas produced in Australia went to Australian users of the fuel. Gas exporters burn more of their own product preparing gas for export than any sector of Australia's domestic economy.

#WeekendReading: Yan et al. on the bad, terrible, not-good-at-all future projections for reef dissolution into the rest of the 21st century. (Have I mentioned it's not looking good?) 🧪🌊 Link: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi…
Anthropogenic reversal of Quaternary coral reef carbon fluxes. (a) During interglacial periods, enhanced carbonate production caused coral reefs to function as atmospheric CO2 sources. (b) During glacial periods, subaerial weathering of exposed reef carbonate consumed atmospheric CO2, causing reefs to function as carbon sinks. (c) Under high-emission scenarios, ocean acidification is projected to shift reefs toward net sediment dissolution by 2100. As sediment dissolution surpasses coral calcification, reefs transition from carbonate-producing CO2 sources to weak atmospheric CO2 sinks, but only at the cost of substantial framework degradation.
