#Webinar - Seagrass Loss and Restoration: Case Studies from the Indo-Pacific ️ By: Rohani Ambo Rappe of Hasanuddin University and Jennifer Verduin of Murdoch University / OCTO When: September 30 2026 Discover more 👇 champ.ly/fzArioar
us02web.zoom.us
Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Seagrass Loss and Restoration: Case Studies from the Indo-Pacific. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
Presented by: Rohani Ambo Rappe of Hasanuddin University and Jennifer Verduin of Murdoch University Description: Seagrass meadows are vital to food security, livelihoods, and coastal resilience across the Indo-Pacific. They provide gleaning and small-scale fishing opportunities for the region's most food-insecure households, as well as essential habitat for commercial fisheries. They also protect coastal communities by reducing wave energy and erosion, buffering storm surges, stabilizing sediments, and filtering pollutants, pathogens, and excess nutrients to improve water quality. Greater Southeast Asian has the largest global extent of tropical seagrass, but over half is degraded. Restoration projects are underway across the region, with varying degrees of success. A recent synthesis of this work identified several factors—including species, restoration methods, light levels, wave energy, and water depth—that are associated with greater survival and establishment of restored seagrass. In this webinar seagrass restoration experts Dr. Rohani Ambo-Rappe and Dr. Jennifer Verduin will share lessons from two of the most extensive and well-studied seagrass restoration programs in the region, including: • The use of simple, low-cost restoration methods in the Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi, Indonesia • Work to replant foundational seagrass species in partnership with Indigenous traditional owners in Shark Bay, Western Australia. The presenters will discuss why seagrass loss occurred, describe the restoration approaches used and their successes and challenges, and share lessons learned about what works, what doesn’t, and why. The webinar will conclude with a live Q&A, providing attendees an opportunity to ask the presenters questions. Subtitles will be available in over 30 languages. Hosted by: OCTO with support from the NOAA National MPA Center

An oceanographic buoy is seen close-up at sea during twilight. The yellow and blue hull of the buoy, bearing a dark blue logo that reads "OOI" and "OCEAN OBSERVATORIES INITIATIVE" in capital letters, occupies the right side of the frame.

Mounted on top of the buoy is a complex, white metal structure consisting of concentric rings and spokes supporting various scientific instruments, sensors, and a small solar panel. Several ropes—two blue and one yellow—stretch from the left side of the frame toward the sky.

In the background, the calm ocean meets a clear sky featuring a gradient sunset that transitions from a bright orange horizon line to a deep indigo night sky above.

#Webinar - MPA policy must include wastewater management to achieve 30x30 effective conservation aims By: David Carrasco Rivera of the University of Queensland and Amelia Wenger of the Wildlife Conservation Society / OCTO When: September 2 2026 Discover more 👇 champ.ly/AX2104XJ

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: MPA policy must include wastewater management to achieve 30x30 effective conservation aims. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
Presented by: David Carrasco Rivera of the University of Queensland and Amelia Wenger of the Wildlife Conservation Society Description: Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are central to global efforts to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. Yet emerging evidence indicates that nearly three-quarters of MPAs are exposed to sewage pollution, with typical pollution levels inside protected areas often substantially higher than in surrounding unprotected waters. Drawing on a global assessment of more than 16,000 MPAs – including detailed analysis of 1,855 tropical coastal MPAs across six regions – this webinar examines patterns of total nitrogen exposure from wastewater and the implications for coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests associated with these MPAs. Results reveal marked regional disparities with the highest pollution loads in parts of East Africa and the Middle East and North Africa – underscoring the need for context-specific wastewater management strategies. The findings point to a critical gap in current conservation policy – area-based protection alone cannot achieve biodiversity or resilience goals if land-based pollution remains unaddressed. This session will explore why wastewater pollution reduction must be integrated into 30x30 implementation to achieve effective conservation aims, while simultaneously strengthening ecosystem health, climate resilience, and the wellbeing of coastal communities. WAVEMAKER: Marine Conservation Startup Award
On 16 September 2026, five marine restoration start-ups and spin-offs will take the stage at the WAVEMAKER Marine Conservation Startup Award in Berlin to pitch their ventures to an expert jury and an audience of industry leaders, researchers and public authorities from across the blue economy.   Hosted by the SUBMARINER Network and funded by EIT Water, with support from the Poul Due Jensen Foundation (Grundfos Foundation), the award celebrates business ideas that are making marine protection and nature restoration more efficient and effective.  Any European start-up and spin-off working in this field can apply, and five finalists will be selected for the award ceremony. Of those, three winners will receive a one-year membership to EIT Water, the new EU innovation community for the water sector. The membership opens doors to funding opportunities, business support and partners across Europe. The first-place winner will go on to the European WAVEMAKER final at the EIT Water Launch Event in Málaga on 15 October 2026, competing with regional winners from across the continent for the European title and a EUR 5,000 prize.  The award ceremony takes place immediately after the kick-off of SPHERE, an EU Mission Ocean project on marine protection and co-organiser of this event, coordinated by s.Pro Sustainable Projects. It is a unique opportunity to meet and network with more than 15 restoration partners from nine countries across Europe, experts from the MPA-Community Network, and other organisations shaping the future of marine restoration.  What applying involves  The application form asks for short details about you and your venture, followed by five open-ended questions, each limited to 1,000 words. Completing the form takes approximately one hour, so we recommend preparing your answers in advance, as the form does not save progress. These are the five questions: What problem do you address, and why does it matter for marine protection and restoration? What is your solution, what makes it innovative, and how does it differ from existing approaches? Focus on how your solution works and what is new about it. What measurable impact will your solution have on water and sustainability, and how will you measure it? Focus on the environmental outcomes your solution delivers, the numbers you expect, and how you will measure them. How viable and scalable is your business model? Who are your customers, and what is your competitive positioning? Who is on your team, what relevant expertise do you bring, and what progress have you made so far (prototype, pilots, partnerships)?  Alongside the five questions you will also asked to upload your pitch deck as a single PDF. The deck supports your written answers and helps the evaluators understand your venture in more depth.   Submit your application by 20 August 2026 via the application form. The five finalists will be notified by 31 August 2026. They will receive expert mentoring ahead of the event and a contribution towards their travel costs to Berlin. Would you like to join the audience, meet Europe's marine restoration community and hear five ventures pitch live? Register your interest at info@submariner-network.eu.
