“When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev- eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern for legality or civility.”

Seattle's political leadership (esp. Bob Kettle) has this fantasy that if SPD just raises its salaries enough, we'll get "top-quality" recruits. Counterpoint: San Jose has the highest police salaries in the US. The top step for patrol officers is $219k, and this still happened.

This segment about public safety is worth a listen and Guy Oron makes an excellent point about the lack of criticism of the Harrell administration, during which gun violence continued to rise in Seattle despite a national downward trend. Seattles #1 public safety issue since 2023 is traffic safety.

If Seattle business leaders really cared about public safety they wouldn’t lobby so hard against the progressive revenue measures that would fund services to get people off the streets and connect them with resources 👀 #seattle #affordability #seattlepolitics

81% of Seattle police calls for service are for non criminal activity The police budget doubled in 10 years. Cops make $154k at 5 years. Most of the city’s $175m budget deficit this year is related to police lawsuits, raises, overtime Why *wouldnt* you defund that?

YES. I lived downtown in the 90s. Pacific Place was a boarded up bar, the old convention center was condemned for asbestos, someone was murdered in the alley by my apt, & I bought cigarettes froma guy behind bulletproof glass. The rent was cheap tho/there was little homelessness -but it was GRITTY.

in the USA, cops can execute Black infants in broad daylight with reasonable belief they'll face no repercussions whatsoever but if they put into writing they were racist about it, the cop'll probably lose their job and the local government will be on the hook a few million dollars in a civil suit

"Seattle AI Literacy" slides including language about "Deliver AI Literacy instruction to students K-12"Slides labeled "Expectations for Students K-5" and "Expectations for Students - 6-12" that lay out "using AI in an educational Setting"

Alternate take … Seattle’s mainstream media is conservative and duped this vulnerable couple into thinking their recall petition was legitimate and then hyped the story even though it was clearly frivolous. This story should have gotten the same level of press coverage as a goodspaceguy candidacy.

By “public safety,” he means “more cops.” The Bite of Seattle shootings, like many murders in this city, happened in the presence of several cops. Police are not a deterrent to crime. They’re not a solution to crime. We need better ideas.
